I just tied my tank vent with a 3/4 hose and 'T' to the OEM tank vent line, then bought a 2" pipe X 2' hose aluminum fitting, and using a piece of marine 2" fuel hose connected it to a through the hull Diesel Fuel deck plate mounted high on my topper. Has worked great since '94, now on third truck.
Frank ---- Suggest you install a vapor fitting that will allow hooking up a 3/4 hose and go to the 'T'. Even with the 5/16 restriction you will have a better vapor flow than if you maintained 5/16 all the way. I have no problem using the big pumps at truck stops, but I remove the main tank cap before filling the aux tank. My procedure is to fill the aux tank first with both fill caps off, then fill the main tank. This procedure eliminates a back up while filling.
Also be sure to use 2" filler line. You can get it at any large boat marina along with the deck plate.
