Live in NYC, they give tickets for no caps on 3500's. Don't want to get into specifics, don't own a business and I am required to maintain commercial plates with out a cap and no permanent business lettering. so for passenger plates I need a cap or a camper on the bed. Question. does anyone have a good dealer in mind for a cap in NYC or a lead on a used callen camper.

Torn between a callen camper shell after the recent posts and my what would be my first camper the (Fourwheel camper). what are your thoughts. the callen is about 3700 with options and a trip down to reno. the fourwheel is about 13k new or about 10k used. i don't do too much camping. ideas

appreciate your thoughts

thanks.

2005 3500 quad cab, 4. 10 srw lwb ctd. auto all stock. awesome machine.

I am familiar with this law in NYC as I used to live in the Bronx and commuted to Brooklyn for many years. You must have a cap to even attempt to drive on the Parkways. I am not familiar with the Callen Cap or camper. There are some nice camper shell dealers out on Long Island. If you drive through Parma, Ohio I know of a real good dealer out there... . family owned and operated. You are in for a tough life with your 3500 in NYC. Good luck !!

Wow - and I thought California was goofy. Whats the purpose of that particular law?

How much would a set of 2500 badges cost??? :-laf

If I recall the decals for the doors run about $50/55. Be cheaper than buying a canopy. Even cheaper to just debadge the truck. And as it is a single rear wheel truck you could get away with it.

NYS has higways they call parkways which are not built to withstand commercial trucks and are limited to non commercial traffic only. Unfortunately the laws also make it so any pickup truck over 5000 lbs unladen weight must be registered as a commercial vehicle... . unless it is converted to a camper or passenger vehicle. There is a document that is published by NYS that identifies what is needed to convert ---- some things to consider (all confirmed personally while driving the NYS parkways):

-All vehicles over 20 ft in length are prohibited on all NYS parkways.

-All DRW vehicles regardless of class or registration are prohibited

-Conversions from commercial to passenger utilizing a cap must have a high riser cap and be converted inside to one of the following:

- Seats installed with seatbelts, or

- Bed with cooking facilities installed

Converting the badges or running a cap with commercial plates may work in some cases ----- but not all.

As far as the finances go ----- commercial plates result in a registration charge based on the GVW and passenger plates are based on unladen weight. On my truck it is 25-30 bucks a year difference.

I have no contacts in NYC but there are 2 reputable shops in the Poughkeepsi and Kingston area.

Actually, some of this is similar for California. If I remember correctly, in Cali, all truck-based chassis' get commercial plates, including most SUVs. For those of us with trucks, we can convert to passenger plates, providing we install shells, and prove that the truck is not used as a truck but only as a grocery-getter, of sorts. I don't remember the details but I was going to go this route several years ago, so there are likely many changes.

thanks for the replies, I actually was interested in the CARAVAN camper shell, not the callen. If anyone knows of a good used fourwheel camper or a used caravan campershell let me know if not thanks anyway!!

Good luck finding a used Four Wheeler Camper as they are very vehicle-specific constructed. I looked into one recently and used ones are really tough to find. New ones are really pricey for what you get. The caravan campers are really nicely constructed. Gemtop,Leer, and A. R. E. produce some good quality steel or aluminum shells also and are well under $3,000 w/options.
