on another note: The first thing i do when neighbors show up on our entry side is introduced myself. the following sentence i let them know if we do anything to offend or disturb them to come see me personally and it will be corrected. I always make friends with the neighbors upon arriving.

we have a radio we play on the entry side of the trailer and I always turn it off about a half hour prior to the quiet time for the park. I also dont turn it up to where the next site can hear it. on occasion they will ask if we turn it up for them to hear too.

It must be getting cold down below..... Gary made a post that everyone is generally in agreement with :D :-laf

I had the a-hole neighbor that you were camping next to I think. He would let is non-neutered black lab run the neighborhood unsupervised, well at the time we were trying to breed our golden retreiver who is always tied up when we're not outside with her. So I go over and tell spankey that my dog is coming into heat and to please keep his dog out of my yard (we've talked a few times about his dog doing his duty in my yard and peeing on the kids toys)

A few weeks later my dog is right in mid-cycle, I put her out on her leash and who comes running over but his dog and it's 11 at night. I get my dog back inside and his dog proceeds to spend the night on my porch, I'm not sure if he went home that night at all but he was there in the morning.

That guy has moved on and the other wandering dog of the area has been put to sleep. All is well for now.

This thread is no different from the stupid driver threads or any of the other ones dealing with respect. There is a general lack of respect for others, if we could shoot em, there would be a little more respect. Good post Gary.

Im with Todd T on this one, but one more thing for all the others. Caution tape. Tape your campsite. I camp at the Desert, Glamis, the beach any where, but when my kids are with me, I caution the hell out of my campsite to keep others out. ESPECIALLY at glamis with all the freaks that decide to drive their carts, etc. 15 ft away from my campsite at 50mph, ridiculous.

I love the ones that let their dogs take a dump in my campsite, and then don't clean it up. Well, I clean it up & take it and put it on their doorstep!

people who don't have pets or kids will never understand and will complain about almost anybody elses. but i do agree some people don't control them the way they should i have 3 dogs and would not go on camping without them that being said when i camp i try to keep at piece with my neighbors but i'm not there to become every bodys best friend either just my 2 cents

Baja Camping

Dane said:
Now you know why I go camping in Baja. No other campers for hundreds of miles Oo.

I've been camping in Baja for 38 years and still enjoy it immensely but if you're a surfer, thanks to word of mouth and the internet there's no way you can find a wave hundreds of miles from no one. These days dads apparently feel obligated to purchase their sons new Toyotas and fail to educate them on the need to "Pack it in, Pack it out. These kids don't even know how to change a flat tire. Aww give me the old days with my trusty 62 Falcon wagon.

MY Black Lab is always with us and we do not even own a leash for him. He never ever leaves our side in the city or the back country. He is more alert in the wild than any human and has alerted us to bears many times and a cougar once. Nice to know when you are out for walk or bike ride in a remote area. He does not bark unless you bang on the trailer door and we are in bed.

Not all dogs are good and many a 24/valve 2/nd gen are no better with the long warm ups while the rest of us like to sleep in.

One parting shot, then I'll drop it...

Fact is, I like animals, I was raised on a farm, and thru the years have had many enjoyable pets of several species. We currently have a small slick-haired Dachshund/chihuahua mix female that was selected specifically FOR travel and RVing.

She doesn't shed hair all over, is small enough to not intrude on our living space significantly, is far less aggressive than a male, and travels very well. She is friendly to all, is good company, and rarely barks - and MINDS when we tell her to shut up. She is ALWAYS on a leash while outside and in a CG.

Better than most kids - and yeah, we've had 4 of those as well, and 10 grandkids. But no, she is NOT "perfect".

She's a GOOD dog, but I have NO illusions as to her comparitive value, and would NOT deliberately attribute more significance to HER existence than that of a human - unlike some twisted "animal lovers" who would in a heartbeat, choose the life their damn dog over a person if a split second choice had to be made.

But a well recognized tendency usually surfaces as threads like this one are aired, and it's along the lines of "My dog doesn't even know what a leash is, is perfectly mannered, and would NEVER poop anywhere it shouldn't, bark, or otherwise be a nuisance to other campers... "

BS!

All that fantasy is much the same as "I'm a perfect and law-abiding, considerate driver at ALL times"...

An unleashed dog WILL wander, whether it's adoring owner willingly admits it or not, WILL immediately do it's crotch-sniffing routine on new strangers as they appear, as well as that "enjoyable" lick-you-all-over" bit - and probably jump all over you, totally mindless of the nice new pants and shirt you are wearing for the very first time...

It has the same dog-like tendencies to excrete as nature calls, regardless of WHERE it happens to be at the time. It *will* bark when excited, and usually much to the annoyance of NON-adoring occupants in the adjoining campsites - JUST AS the sounds of that dandy boom-box does NOT recognize campsite boundries, and impinges it's unappreciated racket on those around who would far rather be hearing silence!

We have had the experience of watching, as uncontrolled dogs of other campers have come into OUR campite at full gallop to attack our helpless leased dog - and while the "thoughtful, considerate dog loving" owners of such delinquints were apologetic, they made NO effort to tether their "totally well-behaved" dog afterwards.

Dogs are animals - and can usually be expected to act like animals. Unfortunately, all too often, so do their owners!

So when some pet owner, who resides somewhere way out there in dreamland tries to convince me as to what a great "animal lover" he is, and how "thoughtful and considerate" he/she is towards others around them in ONE breath - and in the next tells me he/she allows them to run free (regardless of clearly posted CG leash requirements!) and untethered as to not limit the dear thing's freedom and individuality - as well as the potential protection good 'ol Fido would provide if Bigfoot should happen to go on a rampage in the CG - all *I* can do. is

Yeah, as pointed out above, the GOOD guys here don't need the lecture - and the offenders don't, or WILL NOT see themselves pictured above - and inconsiderate slobs come in all flavors - some as drivers, some as neighbors - it's primarily a social illness that won't go away just because someone like me complains about it - so I'm done here.

Cheers.

OK, I'll check in here. Our 2 Shelties go with us when we're in the RV. If they're out of the RV, they're both with us on leash. They've both been through obedience training, and they behave. They don't go into anyone's campsite uninvited, they don't do their business in anyone's campsite, and we pick up after them. They're never tied or otherwise left unattended outsite the RV.

Now, having said the above, it frankly raises the hair on the back of my neck when I see "pets shouldn't be allowed in campgrounds" comments. The day that our Shelties can't go with us, the truck and RV will go on the market and we'll find another hobby.

I camped in a CG that one individual actually put "do not cross" tape around his rental site. Post in every corner, tape between them. Was the focus of many "jokes", but everyone stayed out of his "space".

Has been the only one I have seen on 25 years of camping, but it worked for him.

Yep I take my dog (and bags) and my grandkids camping. Love it.

My rule: If you offer friendly outgoing, I respond with friendly outgoing. If you offer isolation, I respect your choice.

Right now (in a CG) the neighbor on one side offers "I do not want to be friendly" and I have not interacted with him at all (of course he was still driving in and out at 0200 this am). The neighbor on the otherside offers "Hi there, I'm Jim" and we have shared some good times around the campfire.

YOUR choice,

Bob Weis

AND I totally agree with RustyJC.

OK, one more:

"Gary, Why are you so bitter? "

IF you haven't figured THAT one out by now, you are probably beyond hope...

BUT, I am (as clearly and FULLY illustrated in my above posts!) irritated by INCONSIDERATE and SELFISH "fellow campers" who glibly and carelessly ignore rules of good taste and common decency, as well as those clearly posted in most CG's. The ones who take advantage of and intrude upon neighboring campers by way of poor behavior and adequate control of those in their party, both 2 and 4 legged.

We've camped for years, decades actually, and believe it or not, regardless of how THIS thread might look, DO initiate and enjoy friendly association with other campers, many with pets - we have our own along, as does my brother and sister in law, who we RV with a great deal - but we go to GREAT lengths to adequately control them, NOT allowing them to be a source of annoyance or litter in the space others are entitled to use filth and intrusion free for themselves and their families.

MOST campers fully understand and follow the same guidelines of responsibility and courtesy WE try to - it's the clueless and self-involved ones WAY out there in left field who DON'T and WON'T that this is about.

And IF and WHEN, CG rules controlling normal quiet hours, pet control, kids on skateboards, bicycles and similar sources of abuse, are eliminated or ignored, WE will be taking advantage of the many alternative camping solutions for our outings - a few inconsiderate slobs will NOT be dictating when, or whether we continue to RV!

With all due respect to those like Rusty and Bob, OUR RVing (or LIVES, for that matter!) does NOT revolve around animals, nor do I intend that their presence dictate where we will go or what we are free to do! We have had a number of "pets" in our lives - but just because we enjoy the association of our horses, cows, goats and goldfish, does NOT make us feel that THEY must automatically be included in our RVing outings - NOR does their elimination from that activity automatically dictate that WE abandon RVing - Hell, leave the horses and cows in the pasture, and find a kennel for the dogs and cats, if their presence creates unacceptable RVing problems - they are ANIMALS for pete sake, not people, and it is EXACTLY the willingness to allow those animals to dictate and control their owner's lives, and perhaps intrude on the lives of disinterested others, that is the key issue here!

Well Gary, I get it!

We were on a float (canoe) trip this past weekend. our dog does not swim and the CG rules state no tieing dogs to trees and to NEVER leave them unattended. So, she stayed at home and crapped and peed all over our garage while we were gone for two and a half days :D

the neighbor brought along his rot and when it wasnt musing his owners pulling limbs from the trees by swinging on them it was snarling at passerbyers on the road. By the way, i almost at one time went and showed him the CG rules he was breaking:

No cutting or marring of any trees. A $159 fine per inch damaged is assessed for all infractions.

Pets must be kept on a leash at all times while in the campground and NEVER left unattended. Do not attach leashes to trees. Keep leash to a 10-ft. maximum length.

but he was too white trashy looking and i was outnumbered. Photos and a call to the office might have helped but i dont have time to police the CG's.

Gary,

The presence of our pets with us does not create unacceptable RVing problems for us. What problem do they create (with the behavior described in my earlier post) for YOU?

Let's put this in terms more applicable to this board. There are some individuals who modify their trucks and then use them for antisocial behavior such as smoking out soccer moms in their minivans, etc. Would you agree with a proposed solution of "Ban all diesel trucks", or would you say that there are rules and laws already on the books to deal with this, and the solution is to enforce them?

Well, there are rules in just about every campground dealing with pets. Isn't the reasonable solution to apply those rules to deal with the inconsiderate and/or antisocial individuals who don't oversee their pets rather than just "Ban all pets"? What gives YOU the right to dictate how I choose to enjoy RVing if my pets aren't coming into your campsite, aren't left barking outside my RV, etc. ?

To PET or not to PET

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like Mother of Pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up. " The man gestured, and the gate began to open. "Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets. "

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in. "

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump. " They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree. "What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too. "

"Oh, you mean the place with the golden streets and pearly gates? Nope.

That's Hell. "

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind. "

Dogs and snot nosed kids

Gary: 100% right on!!, we are full timers and spend the summer months between Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. We also we own a dog. A Rottweiler, wintering over in Mexico for 6 months out of the year, he’s our “protection”. One MUST regardless of type of animal, (two legged or four) properly train the animal, most people are too lazy to care, hence the problems you have encountered. This causes most RV Parks and campgrounds to ban dogs. (To bad they can’t ban snot nosed brats) I’ve also noticed people with the little “step-on-them” dogs think “their” dog’s pile is just a little, so we’ll leave it, it won’t bother anyone! :D

I'm a moderator on iRV2.com. My wife, in addition to also being a moderator on iRV2.com, is wagonmaster of the Texas Boomers and was wagonmaster of the 2004 iRV2.com National Rally. I say this to illustrate that we know a little something about RVing and reviewing/booking campgrounds. Your assertion that the MAJORITY of RV parks ban pets is most interesting. That might be what you wish, or it might be true of those particular facilities you choose to frequent, but it isn't our general experience, and I don't think a review of the Trailer Life or Woodall's campground directories would support your assertion.

Dogs/RV Parks

Rusty, I should have made myself clearer, Dog owners, who for whatever reason, refuse to clean up after their dogs and leave the MESS for the park owners/operators to clean up is one of the reasons parks adopt a no pet (dog) policy. I did not mean to imply that the majority of parks ban pets. When on the road we try to stay at RV Parks that are DOG FRIENDLY, and use Trailer Life and Woodall's to find those parks.

Bill

Gary , excellent thread. I agree.

Our dogs are OLD and when they are outside, they are on leashes attached to something they cannot move or drag around. Their deposits are picked up immediately also.

Last year when in Estes Park, the "neighbors" allowed their darling little daughters to come over or walk through our site as they pleased. It annoyed me. I arranged our 4 bicycles to sort of form a fence between the two sites. It didn't work, and made no difference whatsoever. We raise our sons to RESPECT others. That includes respecting peoples property, peace and quiet and space too. You won't see our sons cutting through a campsite unless it's EMPTY.

Respect isn't taught anymore. It's a shame that things we enjoy are affected by those who could care a less about others. These people, I believe, don't give others a second thought. It never even crosses their minds to be respectful. It's astounding really.

Rusty,

I agree. It is too bad that while the majority of dog owners are considerate, it only takes the one in 10 bozo's with two loud dogs that screw it up for the rest. When campers hear those two dogs they feel all dogs should be banned.

So whats the solution. At least out here in CA the parks are out of money and in some cases closing. There certainly is no money for the pooch patrol. I agree with some previous posters that there are the inconsiderates in every facet of our lives and banning one thing will only lead to another frustration.

FWIW I would gladly listen to someones dog yipping over the sounds and smells of someones generator, or some blow hard yelling at his wife because she can't help him back up his over stuffed, over loaded fifth wheel into tent spot.
