I think I have a solution for my "problem" - I have picked out a new set of camping attire for future outings - might get us a bit more respect from other campers...

Gary, I don't think that I can give you the kind of reply that you could relate to, so I'll try this one: I go camping with my three kids and dogs and I have never had a problem with kids violating my space or dogs pooping on my door step. Can you please give us a list of the CG's where this happens so I don't mistakingly end up there?

Also, have you tried virtualcamping.com? It's for people who spend a lot of time on the TDR and don't have time to do the whole "camp with real human beings thing".

Gary, I like your style, you make a point and you back it up with good information, you also stand next to the fence and not on it. But wow Gary, you really made a mountain out of this mole hill... ... Live and laugh Gary, we don't have a lot of time on this planet!

It's hard to laugh this stuff off when some kid is jumping his minibike 2 feet from your truck, sending dust clouds through your camp.

Or some other campers dog has been barking non-stop since 7a. m. and it's now 3a. m. :(

i have yet to see a campground where they would stand for minibikes running around i think you need to find a new place to stay

"Can you please give us a list of the CG's where this happens so I don't mistakingly end up there?'

Typically, at least in our case, it's the semi-wilderness type CG's, where there are pit toilets, probably no running water - and NO forestry personel presence - maybe no CG host. CG rules are usually clearly posted at the entrance - and pretty common knowledge even in unposted CG's

In these more isolated dry camps, with little or no authoritative supervision, offenders are pretty free to go as far as their common decency and conscience permits - and some just don't have much of either one! :(

And yeah, campers represent a pretty common cross-section of what you are likely to experience in any common residential area - some are courteous and reserved, appreciating quiet and calm, while others in the neighborhood are partiers, loud and rowdy.

And, those of a loud and rowdy lifestyle probably don't even NOTICE the similar loudness of others in the CG - and might not even CARE, since that is THEIR lifestyle as well!

In a CG setting, as opposed to a residential, with close spacing and no walls of separation, the 2 types of campers are like oil and water - they don't mix well. But the difference is, somewhat different rules apply in the 2 settings, and the ones applying to CG behavior are usually clearly posted at the entrance.

It's just a pity that a few abusers figure THEY are "above the rules", and tend to spoil the outings for their more responsible neighbors...

And IS it "unreasonable" or over-reacting to comment on this issue? Many folks spend SERIOUS $$$ in outfitting for the "RVing experience" - fully aware of CG rules, and willing to do whatever conforming required to ENJOY that experience, while assuring their CG neighbors will as well.

Look, LIFE is made up of, and governed by rules and laws - hell, even ANIMALS have their own basic rules that they live by. We have rules that apply to driving, games, and virtually EVERY aspect of or lives - rules designed to level the playing field for all - for the maximum safety, or perhaps enjoyment of all participants. Even our participation here on the TDR is governed by RULES we are expected to accept and abide by, if we are to be allowed to "play"!

When some drivers decide the law about drinking and driving is not one THEY will abide by - well, MANY of us have had to live close to the tragic outcome of THAT decision! The same holds true for speed limits, stop signs, etc.

We've all at one time or another played games with someone in the circle who cheated - wouldn't play the game according to the rules - and that game was ruined for the other players. I fully realize the expected behavior in a Church - I don't go there to smoke, chew, or tell loud dirty jokes, I *accept and obey* the rules of expected behavior in that place - *I* am better for that expectation, as are the others sharing that experience.

And it takes some pretty self-centered non-conformists to casually or deliberately IGNORE known rules of the CG behavior and common decency, just because they are unwilling or unable to control themselves, their family or their pets - and thumb their noses at their CG neighbors in the process.

YUP - it's a sign of our times, increasingly common, and not likely to get any better... So what's my point and goal with this thread? To increase AWARENESS and SENSITIVITY to the issue, maybe create a small bit of self inspection among readers to see what THEIR behavior and attitudes are - and to at least in some way present my viewpoint, as well as that of those like me.

The alternative is to camp in a secluded location.

AMEN to this! Stay out of campgrounds!

We spent this last weekend (a holiday weekend here in Utah) in one of our favorite spots. Streamside and in the trees. Saw no one within a 1/4 mile of us. No ATV's (not allowed there), no kids, no dogs but our own to roam freely. Fished two streams and caught numerous 10-14" brook trout. Shared the streams with no one. Fished the morning and evening, napped in the afternoon lulled to sleep by the sound of the water.

Only downside is it takes 1 1/2 hours to go from the pavement end to the camp spot on a decent gravel road. Well worth it.

My . 02 is that if you stay in campgrounds, EXPECT an a-hole or two just as if you would in the city driving to work. Gary, if you "fix" the campground nightmare, next we are going to put you in charge of the trade deficit, unemployment, Iraq, etc.

Campground are full of city dwellers looking to conduct themselves as they do at home. If they are polite at home, expect good company, on the other hand if they are idiots at home... ... :(

Sounds to me like Gary has been mis-treated by some inconsiderate campers. My boys and my dogs are trained to respect other people but they are not perfect so I have chosen to wilderness camp. I like it better that way and I don't have to worry about the other campers, good or bad.

Gary, my suggestion would be to get a 4WD so you can enjoy more of the outdoors :D

KBennett-

When you get to Utah, drop me a note and I'll give you the head's up on all the fine, soothing, wilderness camping out here! ;)

HMMmmmm - wonder if they also maks "4WD" 5th wheels? ;)

Nah - this issue has been breeding for a while, and seems to get steadily worse - but over in my "Where DO you like to camp?" thread, you can see a pair of our locally available camping spots - the Magone lake one was what prompted this diatribe - folks in the neighboring spot brought their leashless darling Irish setter that they entertained by tossing a Frisbee towards and nearly INTO our spot for him to chase - and a couple of times he WAS in our spot checking things out as they managed to look the other way...

And as griped about up at the top of this thread, their pair of kids obliviously wandered regularly thru the middle of our spot to get to the bathroom, when there was paved CG road right on the ther side of our trailer - about 10 feet away...

But fortunately, there ARE a fair number of wilderness area campsites within 20 miles of here, easy access, lots of shade, and neat fishing - that's where we will be heading!

Then, I guess we will be complaining about the bears, mountain lions and deer... Gotta stay in practice! :D :D

I vote for the Pirate costume! Then we'll all know it's you and send our kids and dogs to drop a load in your spot!

Just kidding! ;)

Amen to both of you!

Gary,

The presence of our pets with us does not create unacceptable RVing problems for us. What problem do they create (with the behavior described in my earlier post) for YOU?

Let's put this in terms more applicable to this board. There are some individuals who modify their trucks and then use them for antisocial behavior such as smoking out soccer moms in their minivans, etc. Would you agree with a proposed solution of "Ban all diesel trucks", or would you say that there are rules and laws already on the books to deal with this, and the solution is to enforce them?

Well, there are rules in just about every campground dealing with pets. Isn't the reasonable solution to apply those rules to deal with the inconsiderate and/or antisocial individuals who don't oversee their pets rather than just "Ban all pets"? What gives YOU the right to dictate how I choose to enjoy RVing if my pets aren't coming into your campsite, aren't left barking outside my RV, etc. ?

Amen! No one could have said it any better than either on of you! With that being said, I do agree that owners need to keep their pets on a leash, keep them from barking, and clean up after them. It's really pretty simple... just have some consideration for your fellow neighbor. I couldn't imagine going camping without my Golden Retriever, but I realize that there are people who don't share my enthusiasm. Accordingly, I make sure that she doesn't do anything to annoy others. Pets don't bother me much, but loud music does (far more than pets do), so I would hope that the person camping next to me would lend me that same consideration. As pet owners, we need to make absolutely sure that they are well behaved and do not bother others. By doing so, we will increase their acceptance. By the same token, people are much filthier than dogs, and therefore need to reign in their bad behavior, so as not to offend others. FYI: About 50% of households have at least one pet.
