Ok guys I just saw a new Diesel Power that had a PDR cam going in a common rail. Now I looked up old threads on the cams but they weren't a lot of help. So I know of Piers, Schied, and PDR. Any comments on what one to go with? And what is all this talk on timing? True common rail systems injection timing is all computer controlled as far as I know. Thanks.

Well guys it looks like those are great for performance aplications but I'm looking for something good for best mpg and towing. Thanks though.

they help with MPG also, most guys have reported that the cams are similar to injectors, and that they notice a slight improvement. it is also a 10 or so hour job

CAMS and mpgs

If you buy anyones cam for a return on mpgs,. . your wasting your time and $$$ unless you have about 500k miles to compute it,. . just kidding. Seriously, don't do it for mpgs as it is marginal, ... probably 1 to 1. 5 mpgs will be as good as it gets and you'll wash that away with your new found power and your right foot will take it away unless your on cruise on a 500 mile trip. Now the towing is a different issue and speaking about F1 cams you get a nice bump from their H2 cam for both performance and towing. IMO :D

I've got a helix 2 in mine dropped egts 200 deg and noticable powergain havent put enough miles on yet for a milege test though, and its great towing either my tt or my flatbed with my 94 12 valve on board for racing

Scheid cam here. Honestly can't tell you what it did, because at the time that went so did a LOT of other things. I will say this. My truck idling sounds like no other 3rd gen I've ever heard. :D

Thanks guys The MPG is something I wanted to keep in mind. One of the big deals is what it does to the torque curve. Diesel Power said when they tested the PDR with a programer that it droped top torque down 400 rpm and made the torque band a lot stronger even down to 1800 rpm. That is what I want. The sound, mpg's , and hp are just sweet extras.

You might be only getting 1-1. 5 mpg from your F1 cam but as a average our PDR cam is gaining happy customers 2-3 mpg with more useable torque and power. Mileage payoff in under 30,000 miles with a smile on your face is hard to beat. :D

all I know is my f1 cam has obviously helped my engine breathe a lot better. It used to be my optimal speed for fuel milage was right aorund 65 on the interstate. Anything more and my milage dropped from 19. 5 to 17 mpg quickly. To date since the cam install, I have not picked up any milage at 65, but have noticed that even running at 75 to 80 MPH I am still getting 19 mpg. So I guess technially I could say that yes I am gettign2. 5 mpg more than stock with my F1 also. :D

And before anyone asks, yes, this is all hand calculated over the course of 6,500 miles. :D

I'm getting about 1 to 1. 5 miles per US gallon gain with my PDR cam (until I started playing around with bigger laggy turbos.

That's about 1. 2 to 1. 8 miles per Imperial (UK) gallon :-laf

Are cams really worth the money? If so for what application? Towing or racing? Street? Someone please help me out here.
Hardly any of the mods we do are really worth it or needed, its like custom wheels... the OEM's turn just as well.

I did a cam because it offered an increase in mpg,s and performance at the same time. In addition it was a project I could do myself that was kinda fun anyway.

A cam replacement with a stock turbo is awaste of money IMHO. Stock turbos are too much a restiction to airflow to start with helping the rest of the engine breath does very little to aid the situation. I can make 13 pouds of boost at high idle with no load however ;)

As for the timing which is reffered to in cam discussions, we're talking valve timing, not injection timing.
