I was wondering if there was any maximum endplay for the camshaft? the camshaft in my engine broke and while putting the camshaft back in with the timing gear flush with the snout of the cam i have ~1/4" of back and forth endplay. is this too much? it seems like too much and the dowl pin wont go in unless i push the cam all the way back.

thank you in advance

Use a 0. 025 mm [0. 001 inch] feeler gauge to see if the feeler gauge can be inserted between the camshaft gear and the shoulder on the camshaft. If the feeler gauge can be inserted, the camshaft gear is not properly seated.

replace the cam keeper behind the gear I believe they are about $9 from cummins and might get you back in spec.

The nose of the cam must stick out past the gear a little bit. If it is flush it is not on far enough.
