Hello TDR, new member here in need of quick advice. My 2003,quad cab, three-quarter ton purchased one month ago is having cam gear problems. Mileage is 65,000,automatic,two wheel drive. Last week the dealer where I purchased it from replaced the cam gear stating it had excessive run-out. This also was the cause to replace the injector pump gear. For three days everything was fine, now the same noise is BACK !!!!! I'm taking the truck back tomorrow to talk to the service manager about this problem. My thoughts on the issue are the run-out now must be in the cam itself,or excessivly worn cam bearings to cause the failure again so quickly. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. RMedlin TDR# 5071174

RMedlin, It sounds like your harmonic damper (main belt pulley) may have failed which allows the crankshaft to vibrate excessively up front and damages everything hooked up to the front of the engine, and eventually causes the crank itself to break.

Have the dealer look at it and inspect the rubber insert, and check the rotational twist per shop manual.

If the Cam gear and Injection pump gear where bad you would think the Crank gear would of been bad to! You just don't put a new gear on an old gear if one of them was bad. They should of replaced the crank, cam, injection pump and oil pump gears. (all of the gears) But it soulds like you have a bad bearing on the cam or injection pump. (more the likely the injection pump) that is allowing the gears to not run true to each other.

true, the gears break in and wear together, changing one gear would be like putting used lifters on a new camshaft

Talked to dealer today, now I have to wait a week untill service manager gets back from vacation. The service writer said it was OK to keep driving it though. I had misread the invoice, they put in a new camshaft and gear, along with the injector pump gear. I tried to get them to change the oil to get any debris out of the oil and filter, they said it was not part of the repair. That seem's strange to me, if the gears are making that much noise there could be quite alot of debris in the oil in my opinion. Thanks for your thoughts and ideas, I'll let you know how this turns out.

Does it sound like a a growl in the front of the engine. We got an 04. 5 that growls and wines according to engine speed. sounds to be in the front case . I have never hed one like this or herd of any related issues till i read your post. It may be the same for this truck.

TMarsh

If the whining noise is idle to 1400 RPM it is possibly the gear train. Have your dealer contact STAR if the noise fits the description.

well when the high speed kicks in it get louder. It sounds to be crank bearing but its hard to tell with out tearing the engine apart.

figured out the problem to be noisy bearing in the fan hub pulley after removing the accessory drive belt noise went away then starting inspecting components the fan hub bearing was rough and noisy talked to HAISLEY MACHINE AND REPAIR www.haisleymachine.com good people and close friends and found that they had recently had a truck come in with similiar noise which turned out to be the same bearing I work on John Deere equipment and have heard bearings in combines make same growling noise that sounds like gears hope this helps

did not mean crank bearing but at time thought dampner could be root problem because of 2000 rpm vibration but think fan hub bearing is the whole culprit
