When I did my cam change I put the gear in the oven at 325* (you should have seen the dirty looks I got from the wife) and put the cam in the freezer overnight (wife didn't like that either) and when I went to mate the two pieces they slipped right together, no beating or hammering required

what kind of puller is used to remove the gear?

You use a press to press it off.

John's right - we used a 12-ton hydraulic shop press to take the gear off. It worked slick as $#^!... ...
