I’m in the process of gathering parts to fix my KDP damage (timing cover, etc).

A question for those who has done it before: To replace the timing cover, is it easier to pull the gear off of the camshaft or is it easier to remove the camshaft? Any comments either way?

Also, for a stock truck are there any good replacement camshafts out there. I’m not looking for wild, but will be going 370 injectors, a #10 plate, etc. , probably after I get this fixed. If I gotta take the camshaft out, I would like to bump it up a notch or so.

It looks like this would be a great time to check timing and adjust valves. Any other modifications you see would be easy to do when doing a timing cover?

Thank you,

Bud

It is much easier to remove camshaft from motor than to remove gear in chassis. I use a pdr cam and love it. At pdr dyno day, colt cams was there. He was impressed with my results. He liked the torque rise and the way it held the power. PDR CAMS ROCK!!!!

pull the cam... in order to pull the gear, you still have to stake the lifters to get it out far enough to get a puller on it, and a lot of people have problems with the cam gear cracking either when pulling or reinstalling. :(

yes, it's a lot of work, but once you get everything off the front of the truck, it's all right there in front of you.

(and it's a good excuse to put a new cam in there! :D )

I've never heard of anyone taking the cam gear off with the cam still in the block... . Dad and I had to use a 12-ton hydraulic shop press to get the gear off the cam.....

I can't think of a better time to do the new cam... . you have to take it out anyhow... . might as well put in a better grind.

Dad loves his PDR cam, 370 injectors. He plows snow in the winter and tows in the summer. The cam made a huge difference pulling his 6k# boat..... Snow plowing is like bulldozing with finesse... . so he doesn't really go much beyond idle-1400rpm while plowing. Unless he's in transit between lots... . then you get to race the snowmobiles.....
