For those guys that have had the camshaft posision sensor go bad what are the simptoms?



I have a friend with a 2000 3500 and I think his may be going out. The truck will idle rough and will sputter and jerk when it's cold. :confused:



Does this sound like a bad sensor or is it something else.

How cold is cold? Things to check: Fuel and/or fuel gelling. Fuel heater sensor. Lift pump(??) Does it smoke and when he runs it does it feel like it's low on power. Are the heater grids cycling?
 
My CPS went out a while back and these were the symtoms. First the tach went goofy, fell to zero then back to working then back to zero. Check engine light came on. Engine would sputter, miss, and sometimes die..... wait a minute and it would fire right up and run ok for a while. New CPS solved the problem.
 
I had the exact same symptoms as the post above except the truck never died. I would have a huge loss of power when the tac dropped to zero. The new cam position sensor solved all the problems.
 
The lift pumps good I checked it for him. The grid heaters seem to be cyclong ok and it only drops to about 74* here right now.



It sounds like it's his CPS so I think he's going to take it to the dealer. He's got plenty of his waranty left.

Darrellb, had all the same problems as the previous replys had, dealer replaced cam sensor and the problem was solved? Well for aweek then check eng. lite came back on again! Took it back to dealer and now they say the cam is bad! Besides the truck being down for approx. aweek, frustrations are peakin!!!!!!! This truck only has 50,000 on it, and has a bad cam? Reasons for frustations 96- BAD BRAKES! 98- lost motor 36,000( they said rings wrer put in upside down?), lift pumps, transfer pumps 01- as mentioned above. All the trucks got everything but, get tucked in at night! Delo, K&N, 4" etc. None of the trucks were bombed! Gettin tired of the problems with MOtorPARts! Been a mopar man since the 60's with a 68 SS/AA hemi cuda. My 73 1 ton 440 NEVER gave me the problems these new trucks are giving me! Plus it would level hills aka whathill. If i could get a CAT in a 3500 ford, i'd switch! And i rather push my Dodge than drive a ford. Guess i'm pretty frustrated uh? Anyway, GOOD LUCK and take care!
