I have to replace the engine in my 97. I happen to have a 96 with real low miles. I intend to put the 97 pump on it with #10 plate and was thinking now is the time to put a cam in it. So my question is which cam? Piers or DD's big difference in price but want to do it right. The truck will be used to haul my camper and pull the racecar trailer gcvw of about 20,000. I have a Mcleod dual disc and 6sp Ats manifold and eventually an HX40.

Thanks Guys,Rod

Dad really likes his Piers cam in his '98 12-valve...

Helped with EGT's and made a slight seat of the pants increase in power.

Between the cam and the manifold - his cooldown times have dropped quite a bit as well.

I have the PDR cam and love it. Temps down, spool up is quicker and the motor runs smoother at low rpms. You can pull it down and it picks up the next gear under a pull great! Good investment.

Back to ze top. . .

Anyone else running this cammmmmmmmmmm? With what bombs?

Sorry the mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm key is stikky, I spilled Cola on it the keyboard the other day :(

Word on the street is that Scheid has a cam too... they have a couple of different grinds.

The one I heard about most is the 'street' cam - it doesn't require flycut pistons...

The price was cheaper than any other cam I have ever seen - but I'm not sure if they'll let you do a 'cash-n-carry'... or if it's an in-house install only...

Matt

Piers actually has several different cams, re-ground and brand new ones in several different grinds... ... ..... sorry I still run the stock cam so I can't give you any info!

Jim

804hp on a stock cam... ... . Amaizing. That makes me wonder if an aftermarket cam to the tune of $1000 is worth it. (cam is cheeper I know... but you'll need lifters... etc)

I know G@$$ers a cam is huge... . being these are force fed engines it doesn't seem to be as critical unless you are crazy power like Shieds or Kent Crowder..... where your not driving it on the street.

I have a turbo timer... . cool down isn't a problem.

Does it really spool up that much quicker?

Josh

Spool isn't a night-n-day difference on a 12-valve with a cam...

I helped Dad slap a PDR cam in his truck and it helped light the turbo a little easier... the big improvement was in how the torque curve widened. Peak torque seems like it got extended at least until 2400rpm... whereas in OEM form it starts to drop off right after the 1800rpm peak...

EGT's were reduced about 150°F towing and just driving down the highway empty...

He likes his cam a lot...

Yep there worth it, I've needed one for a while now but I've been concentrating money on a short block and not adding a cam as the two engines would have different grinds. Now if I could come up with a used one(the first ones) cheap we'll heck I'd change it just for the R&D.

Jim

I went with the DD cam. It made more sense to me to put a new cam and new lifters into my engine. I should have the truck back from the paint shop in a week and then will be installing the engine. I am making a trip to Indy with the race car in August when I get done with the whole trip will have about 5500 miles on it should be a good test.
