Hello,

Could a 12V Dually smoke the tires?

How hard is it to do?

What do you need to do it?

Does it have the potential?

Any pics?

I think I want that as a goal. Not something to show off, just to be proud off.

Thanks,

Trever

Trever, I'll help you out and try and give this thread some legs. A 24 Valve dually doesn't have any problem smoking the dually tires. :D Of course they have more hp stock and also more hp potential ;) That should get something going.

Abso-freakin-lutely!!!

Back in February we had a show at an accessory plae and one of the guys asked a friend HP upgrades. Since I was fixing to leave, I bragged a little and said I'd show him what kind of HP these trucks can make.

I come tearing out of the parking lot heading north. THe guys told my buddy "It didn't look like he was going that fast". To which he replied " The rear tires were spinning the whole time" :D :D

That was in my 97 3500. A #10 TST plate, a set of 370 injectors from PDR and a Governor spring kit was all I had in the truck. That and you'll need a clutch that can handle the power and torque. For that kind of power, I would look at either the Southebend Con OFE 13" or the Con FE 13"

I've done a couple of 180º's in that truck as well. Once I landed in a ditch.

Thanks guy's for replying! :)

Well, trucks an automatic so it's going to have to be an automatic. I suppose i'll have to upgrade the transmission right? DTT, ATS, Goerend, Sun Coast, etc? No flaming here though. ;) Would have to be something installed up in MN or something that is able to be shipped and then installed by me or whoever.

I think i've seen a picture of TimTheToolman(sp?) doing a burnout with his, I think it's a standard shift though.

Thanks for helping me get the thread started Pit Bull! Thumbs Up!

ndurbin, do you know any of the mods on that 3500?

gitchesum, sounds like a sweet ride! I think I have a #6 TST plate but am not for sure. Previous owner said that he was going to check on it about two weeks ago. :( Which GSK did you have? Also, which injectors are pretty good for the price? PDR's, BD's, DD's, Bosch?

Thanks,

Trever

Yep, i've seen that picture. Doesn't that picture have something to do with the Mitchell's or Enterprise Engine? Way too much for me though! Not too much, just not necessary. Really cool though!

A buddy of mine has a y2k dually 4x4... .

It would NOT burn out at all until I put a VA on it - then it would burn the tires off in the burnout box at the dragstrip.

12-valves are MUCH easier and cheaper to allow for burning the tires off... .

Hey Merrick! :)

Thanks for the reply. Been reading a lot of your posts over the months.

Nice website, and nice pictures also. Making me think more and more about getting stacks. Since I brought up stacks, what makes the different noises from the stacks. I've been watching the Thunder in Muncie movie a lot. I've noticed that Clint Corwin's truck with one stack kind of makes an odd noise, kind of a crackling noise, when it starts out with white smoke. Does that have something to do with the size, the end of the stack, the length, the engine, ..... ? Then you go to a truck like J. R. Adkins or another guy, and it sounds more smooth. Would he have some sort of aspiration, or whatever, injection like Nitrous causing that to make that noise? Any know what i'm talking about?

Back to the burnouts. :D Well, I might as well ask this. What is needed to be able to do 'em? Parts? Price? Skills?

Thanks,

Trever

P. S. I really need to get gauges so I can know when I build my boost.

well, generally, the bigger the pipe, the deeper the sound... . but that's not 100% true. exhaust volume/output also play a role. plus engine size.

Torque This gave me a quick ride in his truck with only a 4" resonator and 5" stacks... . that's definately the best sounding set of stacks that i've heard. straight pipe is raspy, but too much for stacks imho. the resonator just gives it a nice tone.

Wade,

Sweet looking pic man! I've seen that picture before. Is that on DD's site? Is that Keith's? 12V or 24V? Auto?

98rammer,

Thanks for the info! Clint's truck has a kind of a raspy, crackling sound to it. Maybe I can post the video here. I can't find the address for it but I have it saved. Tell me more about that exhaust setup that you mentioned. Was it a kit? If so who from?

JohnE,

You got mail! Errrr, I mean your getting mail! :D

Thanks,

Trever

I had my '96 tuned up at a dealer who uses a dyno in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Before the tuneup, it was 547 ft. lbs. and 160 HP, after the tuneup, it was 555 ft. lbs. and 166 HP. My truck is an automatic, and the tech said the automatics used smaller injectors than did the standards. He advised me to get a set of BD's. They dyno'd another truck, same 160 HP, and with the new injectors, jumped up to 250 HP. This should help to smoke em!!

Thanks Bob!

There is a lot of commotion on which injectors to use? Is their a way to pick them out or how do you choose? I hear a lot about DD2's, DD3's BD2's, Super Mentals, 270's, 370's, Marines, etc. What's the difference in them? The nozzles? Passages?

Yep, straight off the DD site.

Injectors- DDx = Diesel Dynamics and power level.

BDx = Bully Dog and power level.

Marine 300, 275RV, 370's are Bosch designations with the 300 and 370's being 12v injectors.

The DD power levels are 1,2,3, then "mentals" as in super, dooper, and mega--or something like that. DD injectors are extrude honed and the #3 is the largest "street" injector. The Mental series is for racing/pulling and drug use--nitrous and propane, but there are a few on the street.

The BD injectors run from 1-8 I think. That's about all I know about them.

EDM is another injector term you'll here. It is "electro? discharge machining" Metal is removed by an process involving electricity. Don M. is one of the big names in that field--find him at DTR. Extrude honed injectors are "opened up" with an abrasive compound sorta like sandblasting.

"Big injectors" are opened up internally to flow more fuel. This has to be done very precisely to keep fuel atomization proper. IOW -if they don't spray the fuel don't burn.

But injectors are only part of the story, the 160hp pumps might need some internal mods to feed the bigger ones. All things in balance makes a better truck.

I say pick a power level and the appropriate injector and build to it. I just installed the DD3's (100hp increase from stock), and with my DD fueling module, MUST go to a larger turbo to use the upper levels of power. I also have to upgrade the fuel supply system and will probably work on getting cooler air into the system.

If you're going to upgrade the clutch or transmission then the stock turbo should handle about 350 or so RWHP. The stock clutch typically gives up around 300. With a turbo/exhaust, injectors, fueling mods, and clutch/transmission work you can go 425-500 before headwork, cam, and secret recipes have to be considered.

I'm going for 475.

My clutch and exhaust have already been addressed.

Check out the "configurator" at DD. You don't have to follow it absolutely, but it's a real good jumping off point.
