Hey guys - I've got a buddy that's getting ready to do a Cummins conversion in a 2001 Ford crew cab. He'll be towing a 40' enclosed trailer (finished on the inside) with an open-wheel dirt car, ATV, tools, etc. Probably around 20,000 pounds or so at the most.

Question is - he has a '02 model block that he's going to have to build anyway. It will need an injector pump, and he's asking questions about p-pumping it. I've never really heard of anyone using a p-pumped 24V to tow with, but I suppose it's do-able if the pump isn't turned up to much, right? The only p-pumped 24Vs I've seen are either sled pullers or drag racers.

Can anyone give me come tips and advice on this? Is it even worth his trouble to do this? Would the pop pressures of the injectors have to be set to work properly with the P7100?

What about a cam? Is it necessary to have a bolted-on gear with a p-pump?

Right now, I've got him talked out of doing this because I think it will cause more frustration and work than it's worth, but I'm definitely open to more educated opinions.

Thanks guys!

I believe FishinGuides truck is p-pumped and I dont think that it is turned up to the extreme. Hopefully he is around somewhere!! If I understand this right, if you add the more fuel, you have to add more air. A 7100 that isnt turned up could probably be cooled down by a relitively small turbo.

Or he could just through some twins under it and turn the pump up and pull 20k at 65mph up a hill Oo.

Hmmm... unless Dave has slid that one in on me, I think he's still running a VP44. Could you be thinking about the 12V lift pump that he is running with his F1 cam?

Maybe I mistook that for the p-pump. Its been a while since I have been snooping around on the web :{

You can tow quite well with a p-pumped 24 valve. Injectors are a bit different , but other than that it runs like a 12 valve.

Any guesses as to what modifcations are done to them? Pop pressures I assume? Also, is there any certain injector that the p-pump guys like to run on the 24Vs?

It may be that easy for some, but not all. Idle quality is an issue for me. I'm on my 7th set right now. I just got a normal idle for the first time. In warm weather it would idle on less than 6 cylinders.

I am not running a P-Pump. I have the factory original VP44 in the truck and honestly would not do it any other way unless I was racing. JMO.

I do have a cam with a lobe to drive the 12Valve lift pump however. And no, fuel pressure it not an issue any longer!!
