My cousin sent me a copy of a cliping, from where i don't know. it was a question - answer forum. Question: How many gallons of gas does a barrel [42 gallons ] of crude oil produce? It had a name and then the answer ; About 20 gallons. this same barrel also produces 10 gallons of diesel and heating oil [combined ] and 5 gallons of jet fuel plus other products. It was interesting but is it true? Anyone have that knowledge? Robert

It's fairly close, but more gas and more diesel/fuel oil. Around 14 gallons of diesel I think. Someone smarter than me will post here.

Does this explain why diesel coast more per gallon? Or is less refining required to get the diesel which would mean perhaps a lower cost per gallon of diesel. It is all so confusing!!!! I think a lot of us are old enough to remember when diesel was always cheaper than gas.

With 95% of the engines in the US gasoline. All the focus has been on trying to get as much gas out of every barrel as possible. New technologies have been found that allow the gas companies to get more gas per barrel which cuts down the amount of diesel and other "by products" being produced.

The amount of fuel derived from a barrel of oil is arbitrary and is dependant on what the local refinery's market demands at the time. They can make it all diesel if they want to.



I think the question was probably meant to ask; 'how much product can you get from a barrel of crude oil?' I'm not sure, but I believe it is about 95% as you will loose some in the process.

Thanks to all who responded, it was as i said very interesting. They get a lot more out of a barrel than i thought. I know a lot goes into the price of a gallon of fuel but it is strange that the higher oil went per barrel, the higher the profit went. record profits?... . thanks robert
