The way it was explained to me is, Dodge bought the engines without a warranty. It's up to Dodge to warranty the engines.
Warranty work done at Cummins???
I have heard stories of people who got warranty work done at Cummins, but my guess is the dealer probibally screwed things up so badly, and he had to "make things right".
I worked at a "stealer' for a while years back, and I was told that Cummins could do warranty work if the customer was referred to them by the dealer. The shop I worked in didn't have a true "diesel" mechanic, but we had several guys who could do the fluid/filter stuff. Anything more, and it was a referral.
In a nutshell, no Cummins cannot do your warranty work. Patriot is right that Dodge buys the engines from Cummins without a warranty, so Dodge is the warranty provider and has the final say in what is done.
It is possible (slim to no chance) to get Dodge to send it over to the Cummins shop if a job is too big and no qualified enough DC tech available.
Our shop was in a small town with 5 bays and 4 techs. None of the techs was Diesel certified, and we'd get a bill from Cummins and then submit it to Dodge. Perhaps our shop was unique, but I doubt it. I'm guessing that there are more small town dealerships that don't have the talent to do major engine repair and yet still need to take care of the customer. FWIW, it happened rarely anyway. These engines just don't fail.
When I was having boost/map sensor problems I didn't even think of taking it to my dealer. (they don't have a diesel mechanic)What my dealer does is calls Cummins and says "Darrell Blank is bringing over his truck and we are oking waranty work on it". Then once the work is done the dealer pays for it and then they get reimburst by Dodge. I think it all really depends on how good your dealer is and how good the Dodge warnty rep in that area is too. If it's an emegancey they will even let me pay Cummins and then reimburse me through Dodge.
I think if you would ask your dealer, explain that you want a certified Cummins shop to work on it, they will probible agree to you taking it there. As I understand it though not all dealers are as Good as mine.
My dealer would rather you take it to Cummins than bring it to them. They don't even have the software to trouble shoot problems.
The story that Cummins West told me when I asked about this is: You pay then bill back Dodge. You should probably do some serious telephoning to Dodge before starting the work.
On the flip side: With the good service that I have received from Cummins and the lack of service from Dodge it make the decision pretty clear for me.
What I can say about Cummins West is that the truck was serviced at the time on the appointment. It has taken less than the time that they have stated and it has been done "right" the first time or it has been properly taken care of if it was out of their control. Cummins West has been extremely professional about their service and I am hard to please.
I have lost count of the repeat visits to Dodge because they hard to order parts or some other BullS@#$.
