Has anyone out there added the keyswitch to disable the passenger side air bag in a quad cab? From time to time, I would like to able to let my kids ride in the front seat.

Is the wiring all there? Can I buy the switch from a regular cab truck and simply plug it in?

Hey guys

I am currently working on it as we speak. First, you must get permission from the NHTSA. ( easy, just download the form/ fill it out and send it to washington) Buy the switch from Mopar 4 less

$ 15. 88. Then make an appointment at the dealer. (they must program/tell the computer that there is a shut-off switch installed)

My switch is due next week and i will post the results/ total costs etc.

Best regards

For those interested, here is a link to the NHTSA Site where you can down load the request form.

I have wanted to do this for some time.

TDR, 19,000 people with an answer for any possible question any reasonable person could ever ask. Some of them are even correct.

I have the passenger air bag switch installed on my truck.

1st I got the government's blessing :)

Then I had the dealer install the switch. they had a hard time finding the trim for the switch. They had to look up a 2004 truck to find the part. (the 2003 parts list does not have it listed)

The dealer had to program the truck to let it know it has an air bag switch.

I am very happy with it.

Turn over this information to any new owners when you sell. Get a reciept of aknowledgment the information was given. When it comes to kids injuries even being on fairly firm legal ground does not always work.

Why don't they just put the darned switch in there in the first place? Ford does it.

Do we have to ask the government before or after the airbag blows up in our face?

I do not have the part numbers. they can be found in the 2004 parts manual. My dealer "forgot" to charge me or they gave me the parts for the long wait finding the right parts. I paid for the install only. " I ask am I paid in full?" got an yes. :D . So I never got a parts invoice.

This has been in the back of my mind. I don't think a signed acknowledgement would not be hard to get from a private party, but what if you trade it in to a dealer? Where does the responsability lie?

Perhaps the best thing would be to change it back before you sell it.

Also, Ford crew cabs do not come with this switch. Atleast the '99 and '02 I owned did not. The extended cab may have it.

Hi guys, if it were me I would put it back to the original set up, thier are always loop holes that lawyers will find. Some of my friends build home built air planes and they say they will take a hammer to them before they sell them to another pilot. They all say because of the libility. Just my 2cents.

It will have a switch which is pretty obvious and right in front of their face that give THEM the option to turn off the airbag. I would not worry about liability. It's not like you just cut the wires and did not tell them.

Only Ford and Chevy extended cab trucks have the switch. Full Crews do not. The switch only comes from the factory on vehicles that a rear facing child seat cannot be placed in the rear-the QC must qualify.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed after a response from the NHTSA? I spoke to my dealer yesterday and he couldn't find any info on dis-abling the passanger side only. Does anyone know any service bulletin numbers?.

Ken,

See this thread also:

Basically you order the same switch as the std cab, and the bezel for it- apparently the bezel is in the 2004 parts book, not the 2003.

Install the switch-the wire/plug is already there.

Have the dealer program the ACM (airbag control module) to recognize the switch-I looked through the service manual I have for a procedure on that, and could not find it. That is it!

I faxed my request for approval last night :)
