If I install a regular behind-the-grill type trans. oil cooler, can I bypass the cooler/exchanger that is the stock unit next to the block ? I was going to bypass it as the coolant tubes are rotten, and install a real cooler up front... any complications with this ? It seems okay in theory, but am I missing something important ?

In the winter that water to fluid cooler also helps maintain trans temps. To cold of fluid temps is just as bad as to high. You live in cold country. I would keep one installed.

That heat exchanger dissapates alot of heat, you'd probably need several aftermarket cooler to equal what the stock heat exchanger does. DBF did this when his rotted out, heres a link to his photos theres probably a thread out there somewhere too.
