My 2 cents on the original question,
When DOT performed the inspections on me (6 or 7 in past 4 yrs) they look at the GVW on the truck (on door sticker) and the trailer mfg sticker GVW and add them together. They check the truck registration, the registration must not be less than the combined GVW.
If your vehicle has been updated to carry more than the mfg rated, then I would suspect you would need a new mfg rating sticker.
I can not find anything on my truck (affixed to the truck) that states the max. towing weight.
I registered my truck for 34k lbs, truck is 11,500 + trailer is 22,500.
I have never been questioned about my weight. I do have a class A licence too.
