My TPS is shot. I have drove the truck with no overdrive for the year and a half I have had it. Can I just take it off the pump and run without it. I don't see what it will hurt, but wanted to ask and make sure. Thanks, Bill

Bill...

I'd say you should be able too, don't see why not actually. But I can't help but think of what that's like with no OD. On mine I hate to drive it over 50 when the TPS is acting up and won't go to OD. As usual... if this info is incorrect, someone will correct me.

It sucks not having O/D. I can run about 70mph, but she is screaming and wound tight. It has never worked since I got it. The guy had the transmission rebuilt and said he had them leave the O/D solenoid unhooked inside the transmission since his O/D switch on the dash was bad. I took his word for it, because the das switch was bad and you could not shut it off. Well this summer I got a new switch and hooked it up, and of course it made no difference. The switch lights up when you shut it off so it has power. Well I just finally got around to changing my dash blbs and got the check engine light bulb replaced. I checked the codes and sure enough got a code that the TPS is too high or too low. You can adjust it and it makes no difference. So the other night I was changing my transmission fluid and adjusting the bands and I looked at the solenoid and sure enough it was plugged in. So to make a long story short I don't have the money to go parts chasing to find out if it is the TPS, solenoid, crankshaft sensor, etc. right now, so I will just run it how it is. If I take it off it will make it easier to work on the pump. :D Of course I will cover the plog up ith some black tape, for when I do get a new one. Bill

manual OD

If you really don't want to replace the TPS, you can just hook the overdrive unit up through switch on the dash and engage and disingage manually. Because my truck wasn't O/D from the factory this is what I do. All it takes is a switch and 12V power source.

Can you enlighten me as to what wires to use. I already have the factory O/D switch and it has a 12 volt source to it. I guess what I need to know is which of the 2 wires that goes into the transmission do you use? Thanks, Bill

There should be two light gage wires leading into the right side of the O/D unit at the back of the transmission. These are NOT the same ones that go into the transmission itself. One will be hot and the other ground. The one with the stripe should be ground. I can't say for sure since I never saw the donor truck. Splicing directly into the hot wire will allow you to manually control the unit. Power on = OD on, off = 1:1. Because it acts seperatly from the rest of the transmission, it will remain on through all three gears if left hot. Makes it a bit sluggish from a stop. However, I usually don't have a problem with it and only turn it on at cruising speed.

I really like the control it gives me. Cruise speed is now at a decent rpm and it can even function as a gear splitter of sorts.
