I picked up an Edge EZ today for real cheap and tried it out on my truck. I can tell there is a real difference but I am concerned about towing with it without guages. I hadn't planned on getting the Edge EZ but couldn't pass it up for only $50. 00.

I pull some pretty heavy loads, is there a safe level I can use without guages?

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah buy the guages, errr . . a . . no **** red rider. Thing is I was planning on going with a Bullydog with outlook, or perhaps with the TST with the built in guages.

Like I said in the post. I wasn't planning on getting this Edge EZ in the first place, thing is how do you pass it up for $50? So meanwhile, while I save for my Bullydog w/ Outlook, new turbo, new downpipe, exhaust header, new clutch, etc, etc, . . . at what level can I safely tow with this Edge box? Obviously I don't want to go buy analog guages if in a short time down the road, I am going to go with the digital setup from either bullydog or TST.

Everything I hear about towing with the Edge EZ on the new CR motors is that they already have HIGH EGT's straight out of the factory. So towing a heavy load without gauges and an Edge EZ is asking for trouble. :-{}

I wouldn't do it! Hell I wouldn't tow heavy loads with a stock truck without gauges!

50 Bucks, that's an amazing price!

Tell you what, I'll give you a hundred for the it. Oo. Then you can get ya the digital setup from either bullydog or TST. ;)

Yep play it safe and get some guages.

there is no strait answer to the question. to many factors to be this way or that. I have towed in level 4 without a problem with temps. I have towed in level 1 with high temps. both times the variables were differant. obviously towing in the mountains in the 90's will bring higher temps, than towing flatland in the 40's.

you live in the mountains in Idaho... so why risk it, as said before get the gauges. . best $$ you can spend

at the very least and EGT , you can live without boost

towing heavy without them is a recipe for disaster

The only safe level is when towing is if it's total out of the truck. Even then I'd have gauges on a truck when stock.

Take the money you didn't spend on the Edge and get the gauges. You know that you will get them eventually. Of course, I still don't have any, but I plan on staying stock.

I would not. You can get these 3rd gens up to 1300* stock empty. In my mind, the EGT gauge is required. It is your truck.

I wouldn't tow stock w/out gauges

I set up both of my trucks w/ gauges right off. I consider them just as necessary as brake controller and other operating equip. It only takes a few hours to install them.

Just my two cents.

I can bury my egt gauge to 1500* easy while towing my 36ft gn empty. Loaded its wven easier. I tow with it on level 1. I have towed with it on level 1 since I put it in. if I am going to be pulling a heavy load (trailer+load 20,000lbs+) I will dissconnect it. Other than that I leave it in.

I have reached and kept it at 1500 for substantial times running stock. There is not a whole lot of egt temp difference on level 1 and running stock.

Unless your gonna be pulling some really heavy stuff - Id say you'd be o. k.

I don't have guages 'cause I know I won't like what I see. Honestly, Greg Boardman was running an Edge on his '03 and pulling a heavy load and reported that EGT's were manageable. I've been pulling heavy, about 22,000 GCVW and haven't torn up anything yet. On the other hand I'm towing in a fairly cool climate near sea level. :--)

The thing about having them though you know when to back out of it and to give it less fuel.

I am taking it a little easy on the big hills. Instead of burying the throttle and turning 3,000 RPM at 69 MPH, I run a comfortable 2500 RPM and 60 MPH. I'm told keeping the RPM's in this range will help keep the EGT's down a bit.

BTW, the problem is not really the turbo. It can handle the heat. The problem is the ICP's (cylinder pressures) which can get uncomfortably high when the F/A mixture gets too rich. You'll get a lot of heat and pressure. Possible outcomes are blown head gaskets or melted pistons. Either way it's bad news.

Really, I have no good excuse for not having guages except that I keep thinking that Edge is on the verge of releasing the Attitude for my truck. Why install guages which won't be needed with the Attitude?

Another 1. 5 months on the Attitude for the 3rd Gen's... I just called them on Monday. I noticed at the SEMA show they debuted the A2... which is the second generation Attitude monitor... and they haven't even released the first one for our trucks yet!

Is the Juice that much better than the EZ... besides the on the fly adjustment. I'm ordering my diprocol guages next Month... I can't wait any longer on Edge.
