2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Can I safely weld my hitch while it is on the truck?

I have to do a little welding on the trailer hitch of my 01 and was wondering if I can do so without removing it from the truck. I know it would be a good idea to disconnect the batteries but is this enough to prevent any harm to the ECM/PCM or any other electrical item? Thanks for the help

I did it. Make sure you have a good ground and put the ground close to the weld spot.

be sure u have no fuel/oil leaks nearby ,also watch ur wiring . a weld close to wires can heat up enough to melt em. keep in mind that paint within an inch or so of the weld will be gone (inside and out!) and any splatter will ruin chrome or paint. u can look into a weld thru spay that galvanizes the surface after welding for things u cant get to to repaint . have fun!!

Thanks guys, I did it this morning without any problems. I did disconnect the batteries just in case and covered everything close to where I was welding. It was a lot easier than removing the hitch.

I have read that on fly by wire engines (electronics) that welding with these electronics pluged in could cause damage ie ecm's etc.

I weld on Catipiller equipment all the time but i remove the battery cables and on Valvo equipmet they suggest you unhook the ecm and batterys... no problems in 18 years... .
