Engine code after long slow descent

Just got a call from dealer service department telling me they are replacing EGR valve to solve P0402 code. This at a little over 5K miles total and 1700 miles after complete turbo replacement for a P2262 code.

The dealer told me that the truck reports 40 attempts at regen and none successful. And for $200 he will perform a manual regen.

I just drove round trip Portland, Oregon to the coast, 77 miles each way. Dealer said that there are too many hills and curves on this route to really keep the engine speed up so that might not let it regen.

He also said that because I have a ScanGauge 2 connected to the OBD2 port this might be "interfering with the data stream" and preventing a regen.

A couple questions:

  1. Anyone have a ScanGauge and know that they have had successful regens? How about other OBD2 readers?
  2. What kind of driving is going to force a regen?
  3. Is there any way for me to figure out how many regen attempts without success have been made? I don't want to pay the dealer to tell me and I don't want to wait for the overhead console to tell me there is a problem.

When I read the documentation on the regen process I figured that a drive to Portland would take care of things. If not this seems like a completely unacceptable vehicle to own on the northern Oregon coast. There simply are no freeways there and it is an hour and a half to Portland to get out on I-5.

I would say B S and take it to another dealer or mech. all the reader does is read coades or level's

I use a Scan Guage on my 6. 7L , never had a problem! Truck has 27,000 miles on it.

I'd never pay the dealer to force a regen!

Agreed w/ others... . NEVER pay for a manual regen. Those attempted regen #'s are crap anyhow, if your truck has not regened it would have died already. A lot of t he issues w/ regens have been fixed throughout '07 and '08, so now you should be good as can be.

And NO an OBD reader will not interfere w/ anything the engine is doing. You are reading information on public data streams. Sounds like your dealer doesn't get out much... . I would suggest that anything they do they charge under warranty, not you... . perhaps that is why they want to charge you for the regen - they know it is BS and warranty does not cover it?

The OBD2 port is like a parallel port on the back of a computer... or actually more like a USB port we see today... .

Its a port that is parallel to the computer and is able to read the data stream that's going from the senors to the ECM and also the data that is being sent to the other functions it controls... . fuel control, egr, etc...

The scan tool understands the relationship of this stream and the order it flows in... thus it can read and understand it... its also the same port used to upgrade the software, just like we'd move a file from a thumb drive through the USB to the hard drive or RAM...

BUT understand that the tech has not been trained to understand, either the theory of operation, or how to trouble shoot without the menu and their computer... so this just sails over their head and they make conjecture about what they believe...

At least this is how I see it... . If you understand the theory of operation its not hard to see how they just don't have the ability to really understand... . and its not their fault, its the mentality of the factory to treat them like mushrooms... kept in the dark and fed ***** all the time...

There is a list of DTC's that will prevent regens from happening but I have not seen any scanner block it yet. If the truck is shut down during a regen it will count as a failed attempt.

i think that the forced regen should be covered by warrantee, in fact there is a service code for the dealer to charge dodge for the fuel for the regen, and as such they should do it free, and replace the fuel used.

The forced regen is covered if neededin every case

I have run into.

The egr valve is the least likely cause of

The p0402. Other posibilities are exhaust or

Intake leaks, throttle valve or pressure sense incorrect

IF I was you I would cover the fount and drive it till the temp came up. That should let it regen you can bring the temp up to the red line then uncover and drive it till it cools down Call the dealer you took it to to see what speed you need to make it regen or better yet the RPM that way you can gear it down to keep the RPM you need to make it regen. == GOOD LUCK ==

2008 6.9L , Regen ?

Can anyone tell me how to tell when a regen is happening?

I bought my 08 with 32k on it, now at 41k and I have never noticed anything to indicate a cleaning out of the system.

You typically won't notice when the truck goes into regen. unless you have an edge insight or some other programmer/tuner to tell. I know i never knew when my truck went into regen.
