Driving at about 55-65 the speedo needle will JUMP a little. One day I set the trip mileage and the first time it got to 100 it stuck there. Are there any gears inside the speedo housing that could be cleaned or lubed?

The info that I posted is for a 4x4. On the 2x4 the distance sensor, adapter and speedometer adapter are mounted on the getrag transmission.

My son's '90 did the same thing, however the speedo works. He doesn't want to take the speedo head in for cleaning as long as he can tell how fast he's going. He commute's a long distance and doesn't want the insurance rates to go up  But basically, yes the head will need to be cleaned to correct the problem.....

Yaa... . I'm going thru the same thing right now myself... heck I can hit 120 MPH at a stoplight... not bad ehhh ;):D

In fact based on my calculations from the speedo readings and time measurements... I've hit 82 G's on one pull alone... :D:D ... . hmmm, maybe that's why if I turn sideways and stick out my tongue I look like a zipper... . :p :p

The last time this happened it was the speed sensor. This time, I've been told to yank the plug off the sensor and replace or redo the wiring. Often the plug/wiring is the root cause... or so I'm told. Besides it's the easiest and cheapest step to try first.

Bob, thanks for the morning laugh :-laf

My son and I went through the whole system when we pulled the old '90 to replace it with the '96 engine and all the components at the transmission were replaced due to major (source of a leak) damage. So the sensor, housing, etc. were taking out of the loop, all this and my speedo man told me the head had to come out to clean up all the gears that turn the odometer and that's were we left it. At least until my son feels like he needs to know how far he's gone again... ... .

I just went through this while i was driving up here to Alaska. I was in Prince George BC and my speedometer quit working all together so i couldn't shift into O/D so i stopped for the night. The next morning called the dealership and asked if i could get just the wiring for the sensor, well you have to buy the speed sensor to get the wiring so i'd been thinking about getting a new sensor for a while so i got that and a reducer. Everything all together cost me about $170 american so i didn't think that was bad. I couldn't believe how many 1st gens are running around up in BC.

Ya, up here we know a good truck when we see one... . :D:D

I am glad you got your sensor thing cleared up... I can't believe the cost though Chris... that's just not right... I hope the guy had the courage to atleast wear a mask and use a gun to collect the cash... nasty dude, nasty.

My last sensor, bought about 14 months ago or so cost me about $90. 00 Can plus 14. 5% tax. . so, roughly $100. 00

I understand there is some issue's with availability from the traditional sources now though. .

Didn't someone post a source for these somewere... maybe in the "discontinued" forum. . hmmmm

Well the $170 was for speed sensor and i think they called it an adapter. I didn't know which one went bad and i really didn't want my O/D to go out up in the Yukon. And i thought wth why not replace both then since they had them in stock. Yeah if i ever want another 1st gen i'm going to take a drive through BC and find one. The bad thing about it going out was it was acting fine and then i wanted to see how it would do going up a hill so i floored it and the speedo jumped really high and then went to 0  OH well i guess you got to pay to play, i can pull 26 lbs of boost now with the stock turbo. I'm wondering if it will go up even more when i put my POD's in. :-laf
