Competition Can someone explain "RevGain"

I see this term come up in a lot of threads and have seen in on a lisence plate. I see it is usually used as a joking term. I was wondering what it was or does or just what it means?

The only thing I can think it means is in reference to the torque multiplication gained through a torque converter. In a TC, HP in must equal HP out plus heat loss and other inefficiencies. An example (that ignores heat loss and other inefficiencies): the engine is turning 2500 RPM and producing 500HP. The trans input shaft is turning 500 RPM and is receiving 500HP. Recalling that HP equals torque X RPM/5252 (and torque equals HP X 5252/RPM), the engine is producing 1050. 4 lb-ft of torque and the trans is receiving 5252 lb-ft of torque. Now, if I had to guess, I'd say there's around 50% heat loss, so the actual torque into the trans is probably closer to 2500 lb-ft.

By the time the engine is turning 4500 RPM and producing 300HP, the input shaft might be turning 3500 RPM. The engine is producing 350 lb-ft of torque, and the trans is seeing 450 lb-ft of torque - probably closer to 400 lb-ft.

So, in a sentence, 'Rev Gain' is the amount the torque is 'magically' increased across the TC. And, as we all know, it is torque that accelerates the vehicle and moves it down the track; the more torque you can put to the ground, the quicker you can accelerate.

Fest3er that is a good tech defination but I think it has a lot "Looser" definition.

I am not afraid of what it means if no one can post the meaning here, then someone feel free to PM me with the punchline to it.

I'm dying to know :D .

Or is fest3er on the right track? and it comes the big arguement of hp or torque and which is best for racing?

WELL Bill, how about this:

You have a stock engine that on the strip or dyno will accelerate from idle to say, 3000 RPM in "X" amount of time - then you make engine mods - different camshaft, intake and exhaust mods, and now you have reduced the time to accelerate to 3000 RPM by "Y" amount...

The difference between X and Y is "rev (RPM) gain"...

Rev gain is the ability of an engine to increase the RPM. It is basically the ability of an engine to acclelerate. Not only do you tune an engine for constant HP, you want it to be able to acclerate quickly. The lower the inertia on the engine the better.

My Intelectual thirst for knowledge is now quenched for today. :D thanks guys I new someone would come through.

Its a fuel additive that is created from a discrete blending of Rogain and Viagra tablets with a PowerSevice carryer solution. As a precaution, if your trucks rev's hard for a period of more than 4 hours you need to consult a mechanic.

"Rev Gain????"

COMP,... ... ... . COMP,... ... ... ... ... ... COMP,... ... ... ... ... COMP, are you there???

Man,..... COMP is never around when you need him to explain something!! :-laf

Rev-Gain is simply the ability to accelerate.

I. E, rpm/(sec^2), an acceleration rate. Meaning you have the ability to accelerate a given amount of rpm per second.

A lower "rev gain" will feel like a lazy engine. A high rev gain, more peppy.

Now whether or not it has merit is up for you to decide...
