Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Can someone explain the airflow on these 5.9's??

Sorry for being so stupid but I was just staring at my motor and I realized I don't understand some things. First off why is the air filter on the exaust side?

And what does the middle radiator thing do with the two large air hoses on each side on the bottom? Is there coolant in that thing. Lastly what's the small radiator that is closest to the grill for? Thanks.

The air filter is on the ex side because thats where your turbo is. Exhaust gases drive the turbo- air in the air box- through the turbo through the intercooler (middle radiator) into the engine. The intercooler has no coolant in it. The other small cooler I think you are referring to is the transmission cooler.

Not so Stupid

Not so stupid... The Airfilter is on the Exhaust side of the engine because that's were the air inlet to the Turbocharger is. The Turbo uses the Hot Exhaust gases to drive a Compressor Wheel that takes the ambient Air and compresses it to a higher pressure (About 2-5 Psi at cruise, and about 18-20 Psi Under full {Stock} Power). After the Intake Air is compressed it's much hotter than it was, so it's off to the Intercooler ("the middle radiator thing do with the two large air hoses on each side on the bottom"), which cools the Intake air down some what. From there, it goes to the Inlet on the Driver's side of the engine to be combusted with good ole' number 2 Diesel fuel.



The small radiator by the grill is the cooler for the Automatic Transmission Fluid, and the bigger little radiator is the Condensser for the Airconditioner.

The truck in your sig is a 6 speed? There is not a transmission cooler on a 6 speed truck.

hoses from the intercooler and cold air intakes

For any who come back to this. Thanks for asking "Tomscreek", I was just looking at that last night. My question is with the tubing coming from the intercooler, to the turbo, if I were going to put on a cold air intake, how would I route the hoses?? It seems the intercooler hose is right at the intake for the CAI. It may be a stupid question, but I can't picture it.
