I've been doing that since I bought my truck (3) weeks ago!! My brain hurts from all the stuff I've been reading!!

I haven't yet seen an answer to the question I asked in the Search forum. That's why I posted it.

A very basic shot of theory is six plungers inside six barrels that move up and down by a cam with lobes on it. the amount of fuel is controlled by the gov. assemble that you saw in the prev. post. as the rack opens up the plungers push more fuel = more power. thats why if you remove the fuel plate the rack can go to max travel and the pump moves lots more fuel.

there is much more to it but this is the nut shell explaination

p-pumps

i work for a injection shop i have rebuilt about 50 p-pumps so what do you want to know i have built 7 custom pumps mine has 13mm plungers 5k custom gov custom cam all the goods

I kinda tought the pump part was simple (but ive seen guys get hung up on the port/helix operation). That RQV gov gets to me though.

TMR-- Have you ever had anyone dump the RQV and its flippin aneroid and go with a plain jane limiting speed gov??

That little bugger works just like a miget motor hung onto the side of a full grown one. Pistons, sort of, cam, cam gear, except, this sucker pumps instead of receive.

Really, that's to large question to get an answer posted.

There is a gear that went bad in the p7100 pump in my 98 CTD.

Maybe you could shed some light on what gear it was that went bad and what it does.

Here's a whole Soap Opera on what happened to my truck in this thread... ...

http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/showthread.php?t=87981

? I need to re read that at lunch tomorrow.....

BTW- not uncommon for these trucks to sell befor detail, 'specialy the 98 12v. High demand. Mine for example was traded on sat, I saw it on Sun. and bought it on Mon.

I imagine a huge part of your wait was the tech going to the parts counter and getting " we'll have to order that". Even big dealers dont stock much for diesels.

PS i go by tobert on that site but im usualy here.

Kamandu... ... ..... You got me on that one. The only gear I know of that "holds" timing is the large gear inside the timing cover. That's the one with the camfered shape that fits over the pump shaft. Though I don't think I've ever seen one worn out. I wonder how it happened?

. . Preston. .

My guess is the timing slipped after they put it back together and the instantly thought the gear was bad because it spun on the shaft.

My ol' college buddy at cummins midstates says that happens more often than techs like to admit. well 2 out of ten anyway. with no key on the pump, you dont realy know if it slipped when you thighten the nut. If clean and dry it SHOULDNT, but always an exception.

BTW they reset timing in stead of replacing gear if that were to happen.
