Well to make a long story short, I poked a hole in the exhaust pocket under the valve, doing my shade tree port job. It was on the number six hole. I figure the others are real thin at this point. Just wanted to put this out for you boys to laugh or cringe. I sure did both. Walked around the shop a while and went back hoping it wouldn't be true. Called the wife a work and said I just make a 1500 dollar f***up. She said call Piers.

Hello Piers..... yeah, I need a head a stage two head. What's the shipping to Montana... ...

Dave

Ouch! Well I am not laughing. That stinks. I hope you get it fixed soon. I know what it is like having your ride just sitting and not being able to drive it. Mine seems like it is allways down for one reason or another.

Stomp

Well, I got a head coming from Piers... . Stage one. I couldn't swing the next stage.

I have been looking at it, thinking about welding it up, but as a welder I don't think that I would be a good fix. It is just too much to risk. Oh well, it reminds me of a story a junkyard man told me, as I was searching for a flywheel for a chevy one day.....

" kid, education cost money, either you are paying it out in tuition, or it costs you in hard earned lessons. "

Stomp, what did you think of the second stage head? I am curious to know what kind of porting a third stage had done to it. I couldn't believe the residual cast left on the exhaust, right under the seat on the stock original. I wonder how much a guy could get away with, interms of wall thickness between the exhaust and the coolant.

What do you do at the power plant. I work on coal fired ones as a boilermaker. Is the old Samoa cook house still open? I stopped by CR this summer. Lots of memories.

I have been reading on this site for about a year and a half, only having become a member this spring. What's funny to me is that I have read so many posts that many of you guys have become familier to me, your "computer voice" your humor, ect. It seems to me that a lot of guys in the first gen. site come in, contribute, modify their vehicles, then over time, fade away; Lives change, sell the truck and move to a newer model or get it to a performance level they like. I remember a post from last spring concerning the same thing. It was just a thought I had run through my head a while ago... ... what happened to the people who were so involved years ago?

I'll shut up now,

Dave

Dave

The stage two that I got is awesome. It dropped my egt's 200*+ and my smoke at WOT went from Black to a grey haze. Another thing to consider for your head is getting the heavier valve springs and o-ringing it. The valve springs could go in later, but you probably don’t want to take the head off again just to get it o-ringed. I would recommend this if you plan on bombing your pickup some more or running at higher boost pressures. I think from Piers an o-ring job costs around $300. It would be cheap insurance if you did it now. Just a suggestion. I don’t know what kind of porting the third stage has, but it must be pretty awesome considering the flow rate from stock to the third stage porting.

Yeah the Old Samoa Cookhouse is still open and they still have good food. I went there for breakfast last year sometime.

I am a Armed Nuclear Security Officer for PG&E at the Humboldt Bay Power Plant. Its an all right job good pay, but not much excitement. I don’t think I would like to be here when the $h!! hits the fan if you know what I mean. (big mushroom cloud here) :-laf

Let us know what you think when you get it back together. Alot of people dont relize the benefits from a nice ported head.

Stomp

that sucks dave! sorry to hear about it. oh well, now you've got a tried and true one on the way, eh? AND, since you are wondering just how far you can take that stuff, you've got the perfect piece to experiment on! maybe you could even cut each cylinder apart in a different way to get some different angles on the thing. anyway, if you don't want to do that, i'd be willing to ship that thing down and do it myself. and post pics, of course :D. anyway, now you will have time to shine those exhaust bolts, or something. right? better luck on the rest of your project.

dave

Seriously, PB, reading old posts I have seen your knowledge level sky rocket from asking questions (2001) to writing chapters on various items ('03 and '04). Oo.

It is a great boon to the guys who come a long later. Not to make anyone feel old, just observing after going back as far a I could, to get information and pictures of porting and such. I couldn't pull up Dave Miller's pictures on the subject though. I think the link is broken.

Well, Stomp, I realize that I should get the head o-ringed, but I am just seeing dollar bills sprouting wings and flying away, especially yesterday. I'll call Harry again and have them do it while they have it. I'm getting the 60# valve springs, and she comes with a three angle valve job.

Swank, I gladly give her up for science, but not quite done looking at her yet. I want to ultra sound the radius' that I was working on and see how close I was to going through on the other five holes. My suspition is that the walls are really thin on some of the other ports and had I not screwed up, I think that something would have cracked later on, and I would be into bigger problems. My thoughts were along the lines of a cylinder full of water doesn't like to compress. So all in all I will come out a head... . no pun intended :D

Swank, I'll let you know when I get the U. T. done. Maybe I can bring it to you, as I am on the road quite a bit.

so long for now,

Dave

I see a couple of 12 valve heads on E-Bay. I just get nervous about that stuff. At least I know what I am getting from Piers.

Thoughts?
