2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Can`t stop rear side axles from leaking!

i have rebuilt my side axle seals and bearing in both sides and gear oil is still gettin out on my wheels! i looked for a wear mark where the oil seal rubs on the side axle but there is none. has anyone had this problem? thanks

once, guy kept giving me the wrong seals, double check that.

You may beed to install a Redi-Sleeve, had to do that on mine, gives the seal a new surface to wear on.

i had same problem on mine I had the dealer replace seal on driver's side twice under warranty in the first 30,000 mi. then I replaced the seals on both sides at 50,000 because both sides were seeping. I found that if I torqued the wheel bearings just alittle bit tighter than the service manual said by about 10-15 ft. lbs they never leaked again and that's with 150,000 mi. since then and still going.

you may need a redi sleve, also check to make sure your breather is working properly. If it is not it can blow out seals.

I have had trouble with this as well in the past. Never could see a reason for it. Replaced my left one once and it has held fine for a long time. The right side is the one that kept giving me trouble. Mine has no wear on the spindle either, believe me I have checked very carefully each time I changed it. The other place they can leak is around the OD of the seal. Take special care not to damage the ID of the hub when remove the old seal. Also take special care when installing the new one. Use a good RTV or maybe even loctite around the OD of the seal when installing.



My last install seems to be holding. As others have said check your vent.

We are talking about the "rear" here, yes?

If the leak appears to be between the rubber on the seal and the hub then you could polish the hub surface with 1500 - 2000 grit wet/dry paper - if you choose to do so I recommend using the "wet" method & WD-40, or other light oil.

A few thoughts: When you install the seal to the hub apply a bit of silicon gasket maker on the hub to seal bore and smear a bit on the outside metal edge of the seal before installing. When you install the hub apply some white grease on the mating surface of the housing to seal area. Prevents dry start/cracking of seal.

If you are getting a leak at the flange surface (housing to hub) use silicon gasket maker on both sides of the flange gasket.
