can this be removed (PIC) to protect my upper rad hose??

my upper radiator hose is being abraded by the cover shown in the picture (forgive me, i forget what this is). how difficult is it to remove, if it can be? and as a side note, how many steps need to be done in order to replace the upper hose as a PM service? can i just pull the clamps off, and deal with the loss of the coolant in the hose? after almost 10 years, the hose is still in remarkably good condition. but may as well...

That's the bellcrank cover for your APPS. I believe only two clips hold it on, but it may leave the bellcrank/APPS assembly vulnerable without it.

i thought it was the APPS. i noticed that there is a screw in the top of the cover, but was unaware of what other connectors hold this on.

There are 2 scrivets that hold it in place the one you have already found and another hidden by the upper hose. The cover is there to protect against the elements

cut 1/2" or so off the radiator end of the hose to move the hose closer to the radiator and away from the APPS cover.

or when you replace with the old hose just make a rubber shield with the old hose and zip tie it to the new hose

Or simply add a short piece of 1/4" x 2" wide self adhesive, closed cell (grey) foam from Home Depot to the front of the cover.

Also, verify that the upper hose is fully seated on the radiator hose neck. Going down to a 7 psi radiator cap will help some also.

Drop by your local hose shop or electrical supply house and buy about a foot of 2" split loom. That and a couple of small zip ties will fix it and it will look factory.

How is going to a lower pressure cap going to help with the hose clearance issue?

went to a fuel radiator hose business , and they had these plastic hose protectors that you just zip tie on to the hose that is being rubbed..... just what you need... . thought of this post when i saw them... ...

At lower pressure, the hose won't have the tendency to try to straighten itself where it curves into the radiator. It is also easier on the radiator and heater core.

Agreed. That is exactly what I did on my '03 several years ago and the split loom has protected my upper hose very well.
