Competition Rich, Lean fuel - effects on Propane Engine?

I understand that in gas vehicles you add more fuel and nitrous at the same time and retard timing and other tuning issues. On a diesel you add n2o and it cools egts at the same time plus make hp. Is it possible to have a lean condition and burn a piston or hurt ring glands? If your way over fueled how can you hurt a diesel motor if its already 1500* + on egts by adding n2o. Plus tuning issues. Not like you can pull a sparkplug and check it? Just go by egt gage?

nitros is evil. . it washes down the oil on the cylendar walls and will hurt your rings i heard propane injection is the way to go on diesels if you want lower EGT's

NO2 will NOT wash down the oil on the cylinder walls. It's also debateable whether it will reduce egt's. It will lower intake temps but you are now burning more of the available fuel so more heat is created.

As for propane I would stay away from it! Bad stuff happens when you introduce an another fuel into the system with no regard to the injection cycle. Talk about head gasket issues... .....

Doug

nitrous is oxygen and nitrogen... it's not going to wash anything...

lowered charge temps from the fact that it's cold, and added oxygen should = lower EGT's... but it also adds cylinder pressure which = power (and head gasket tickling)

Forrest

Nitrous. It's a good thing. Yes, too much and the fire goes out. Too little, no issues. Propane, I personally do not like adding a combustable compressed mixture into the intake. One backfire, and kaboom. We have seen many cracked heads, intake plates, and blown turbos from it.

Each to their own.

I've actually seen a big shot of nitrous make EGT's rise faster. I cant say if it got hotter or not because the numbers on the pyro only go so far. Is it bad when the pyro moves as fast as the the boost? :-laf

Noss

If I hear one more idiot refer to a Nitrous-Oxide injection system by the word "noss," I think I may start shooting! :p

For the record the movie "Fast and Furious" was the dumbest movie made since ... , uhm :confused: ... , I can't even think of anything as ridiculous as that waste of 90 minutes. :-{}

most forums I'm on and people I hang out with will rip you a new one for calling nitrous "nos", but it seems to be pretty rampant on the diesel sites...

Forrest

Well, thats good, because I said NOS, not "noss. "

NOS, is the accepted abbreviation for it, just as Crescent wrench is used for an adjustable end wrench, or Channellock is used for adjustable slip joint plyers.

That said, its still a crutch. :{

NOS may be an accepted nickname for it (in some circles :-laf ), but it's not an abbreviation for it... NOS = Nitrous Oxide Systems... IE, a COMPANY that sells nitrous delivery systems...

everyone calls tissues "Kleenex" (the product name), but they don't call them "Johnson & Johnsons" (the company that makes them)

you're not injecting the delivery system into your engine... the product you're injecting is a CHEMICAL...

if you wanna talk about the company that's providing the actual product that you're injecting, why not call it "BOC" or "Air Liquide" or something? :p

nickname the chemical whatever you want... juice, squeeze, etc. but realize that when you call it "NOS", you seem kinda silly in the eyes of a LOT of people out there :)

PS, a lot of things are called "crutches" by people who are getting beat by them...

twins, air/water coolers, automatic trannies, water injection, methanol injection, etc. etc. etc.

run whatcha brung :p

Nos nonsense

"NOS" seems to be what the soupcan on the tailpipe ricers call nitrous. We certainly need to disassociate ourselves from that!

Hey Gene, ya forgot "vise grips". How ya been?

Cousin Billy

Considerang when I first heard the "SLANG NOS",(better?) was before ricers or Cummins Dodges were invented, I would say the ricers copied off of US.

LMAO!!

It shouldn't be even mentioned on a Diesel board, you slackers!! Learn how to build power with Diesel fuel, it will pay off in the long run, and you wont be accused of copyin what the ricers use to make power, eh?

Doing good, Billy,! ;)

I thought it was silly back when I first heard someone say it back in the 80's...

nobody's copying ricers... people have been using nitrous LONG before the weed wacker Slow & Bi-Curious trend started... ricers are copying fast cars...

but ricers use turbos to make power too ya know...

and Pro Mods, Outlaws, etc. use nitrous ;)

I don't use it, but if I get beat by it, I don't cry foul... I go home and figure out how to make more power.

lets add titanium aluminum and chrome molly to that ,

First EGT’s are a way of analyzing what is going on in a combustion chamber , in a gas motor if your on the lean side you EGT’s will be hot , until you get extremely lean then they cool down until the melted electrode of the spark plug goes by and hits them. The same is true for fat, rich the EGT’S cools down, until it’s so fat it burns out the pipe then it goes the other way. The moral of this is you have to be in the ballpark to make them meaningful. The ideal that a diesel can’t run with out smoke boiling out is ludicrous, lean is mean and its also hot , my EGT’s are up almost to 1900 at the end of the run with no smoke at all , when I add fuel its actually cools down a bit. This all with a small amount of nitrous .
