Well as a person who did a cat back first, then removed the cat second, and then went 4" all the way third, the biggest change in EGT's was removing the cat. Overall I like the 4" exhaust and believe its the way to go for EGT's as well as sound and spoolup. In terms of pure EGT reduction nuking the cat was the single biggest change.
-- The cat back exhaust alone made no difference that I could tell. Also little difference in sound. A little cooler but not much.
-- Removing the cat and replacing with a DC test pipe, made a significant difference in EGT's. Overall WOT was down about 150*, but also raised slower and were lower at cruise, and lower on basic hills I drive every day to/from work. -- Also the best improvement in sound. However at this time it did have the 4" flow thru muffler and tail pipe. So I cant say what the sound inprovement is by just removing the cat.
-- 4" downpipe and pipe back to where cat was located ( now a complete turbo back) made a small additional difference in EGT's. Dont notice any sound difference. Turbo spoolup is now better though. Response seems better. -- Maybe just all in my head. But I was not expecting anything. I had the addition stuff installed to complete the 4" to support a BD 4" remote mount exhaust brake. My expectation was about getting an ebrake installed. The EGT's, sound, and spoolup up are just observations driving around for the last few weeks since it was done.
