My 96 has a leak that I cannot chase down. I can fill the system with freon and will leak out by 5 or 6 days. I have tried two different sniffers, but no luck. I have been reading that the evaporators are a known problem. If I am correct, you have to remove the dash to get to it, just like the heater core. Is there an access hole where I can stick the sniffer in and determine if it is the evaporator leaking?

You can also stick it in the drain tube. I also removed the fan and did it that way as it is only 3 metric nuts to remove.

JD, if you check evaporator and it's not leaking, check the compressor at the front seal behind the clutch fan, my 95 was leaking there for a long time and I was unable to find the leak. Clutch finally gave out and replaced the compressor, leak was gone. When I applied air to the old compressor to check for leaks, I discovered air escaping from that seal with soapy water. Never would have thought that I would have a leak at that spot. Compressor was going on 13 years old, though. Just a thought, since your truck is almost as old as mine. Hope you find it, compressor is easier to change out than the evaporator if that's any consolation.
