Canopy - Leer Model 100XQ

I am thinking of buying a Leer 100XQ and I am wondering if any of you have any comments either good, or bad to help me chose a good quality canopy.

I have owned an A. R. E. Z Series on my 2002 ram 1500 and it was a nice cap, for my 2005 Ram 3500 I decided to go with a tonneau cover this time as the last three trucks I have had caps on.



I made a big mistake of buying a Jason tonneau cover, never again will I buy any Jason product and I advise all others to be very careful as that company is a joke when it comes to quality and backing up their product.



I just ordered a Leer Tonneau cover to replace the Jason junk, I like the hardware that Leer has come up with and think they have a nice product.



For caps, I would recommend A. R. E. Z Series as well as Leer products. Florida Line makes a nice heavy duty cap if you have a dealer that handles their brand.



Over all I think if you stick with the following, A. R. E. , Leer or Snug Top you will have a nice cap that will be backed by the manufacture. All the others are smaller company's and cannot be relied on to take care of problems resulting in their warranty being nothing more than a sham.



Again Beware of Jason products, very poor quality.

You can check out the pictures of my Leer in my gallery. I like Leer products but there are some small issues with this particular poduct that I would not have expected from Leer.



For example, the rear slide in the truck and on the canopy slide from opposite directions. Small issue, but annoying none the less.



Also, the Leer does not fit the bed rails as well as I expect is should.

I have this canopy and wish I'd gotten something else. The opening in the back is so low it's hard to load many taller items. Also, its tapered towards the back which kinda makes it look like the truck is leveled or lifted in front. This effect works OK with a 2WD but on a 4X4 it always looks like the back end is sitting lower than the front. Beware, those long side windows only open slightly - not enough to have a dog back there!

Finally, some of the hardware is rusting where other manufacturers use SS.

Check my rig gallery. These Leer fit better then other caps. I have seen the sides overhang the sides of the truck bed with the other brands such as the snug top.

I had the Leer 100 XQ on my 2003 Ram 3500 SRW... I had one of the first one's for 3rd Gen and also got many compliments... I really liked the flip down window in front, made it real easy to clean the rear window on the cab of the truck... My only beef's were that the seal on the rear flip up window practically took the paint off my tail-gate, the gaps in the area where the cap door met the gate would allow water entry when driving in heavy rain, and the damn LED brake light never worked as advertised, of the 15 or so bulbs, I'd always have 4-5 that would not illuminate, took it back and they replaced several times at no charge, was just a hassle, mind you Leer had nothing to do with brake light, but it was on their cap... For the money, a good value...

I purchased my 2003 100 XQ used on Ebay and have had no issues. The quality is better than some of the other caps I have owned.

I just bought a 100XQ a couple months ago, and I can echo that complaint. The window to tailgate seal, while it provides a nice clean look, doesn't work that well and has already ate away a thin strip of paint along the top edge of my tailgate. I am thinking about taking it back and trying to retrofit the 100XL plastic that overhangs the gate rather than trying to seal up to it. Other than that, I love the shell. I had a 100XL on my '99 and I think the fit and finish is better on this one. As for the tapered design and smaller rear opening, anyone who complains of this just didn't do their research, as that's the whole point of this shell. I like this styling, and it's better for MPG... but is not the choice if your needs are utilitarian. As for the rear windows not opening far enough, they let in a whole lot more air than the "flaps" on the 100XL and snugtop/are equivilents. I like the fact I can sleep back there in the rain and no water comes in. Overall, I'd probably buy a 100XQ again... and hopefully I can get that rear window seal modified.

I love my ARE Z series. My dogs do too. Locks with my remote and the dome light is wired in. My dads lear had a POS battery lite. Pics in readers rigs.



You fellas with the cap seal rubbing on the gate... I had the same problem, but I caught it in time, go to your local hardware store and pick up some 1/8 thick x 3/8 or 1/2 in foam weather stripping. Stick it on the underside of your cap gate on the surface that meets up with your tailgate. Dont get it too thick or up too close to the gate or you'll have problems closing. It really helped keep the paint on the top of the tailgate and you'd have to look for it to see it.

Best looking shell on the road for these trucks. I've had Leer's on all my trucks. Never an issue. See rigs. Some interior shots and a nifty boot gizmo I like.

Two of my buddys bought Leers and regret it due to window problems. One friend's window blew out under off road use,the other's shattered when he closed it"too hard" Dealer wouldn't cover it and charged retail for the fix,$200. 00 +. (OUCH)

I have a 100XL and it would have done the same thing. On my 04. 5, I installed a strip of 3m tape where the seal touchs the paint and no problems. On my 06, I had them run the sprayin bed liner down further so the seal is touching the bed liner only.



I have no complaints about mine other than it is old enough that it does not have the new rear handle. The little lock button is a pain and has frozen shut a few times. Personally I think the Leer 100 series are the best looking toppers out there. The aero windows are very clean looking. The overall fit and finish is also very good.



Make sure you order it with a Thule roof rack

That happened to me on my Leer cap for my old Tundra. The window broke and I was standing there with the lever in my hand and a puddle of glass at my feet.

They said I have to pay for it, I said no I'm not... . YOU are. They did.

Four years after that, no problems. 1 1/2 years of the 100XQ, no problems.

I also spend a lot of time doing fishing recon on the unpredictable fire roads of the west. No problems.
