Can't Download Video from Camera to XP

I have a Canon Powershot SD600. It's a digital camera, but also can record movies (BTW GREAT quality!). I can only watch them on the camera. When I try to download to PC, its says "Can't save picture". I played w/ XP moviemaker, downloaded the Canon software that came w/ the camera and tried a few other video editing programs from downloads.com. Still no go. I am up to date w/ XP updates.



I think it's in AVI format.



I shut off most of the "Junk" not needed according to the page below. I wish I had done it a long time ago.

This is a memory card only camera right? No tapes?

When you plug in the camera a new removable drive should show up under My Computer. You should be able to get the movies off that way.

Could the movies be saved on the memory that is part of the camera not a stick? I don't have this type of camera, just have an idea

My camera records in QuickTime format. It's a Lumix brand. My Olympus does the same thing. XP's Movie Maker won't be able to edit these formats.

It's a memory card. When I plug in the camera it shows up. No problem.



I am getting this error:

The camera downloads: "MVI_0118" movies.



I have never heard of MVI.

MVI is probably just the file name that the camera gives to the file.
MVI is probably movies and PIC or something similar are the pictures.
Can you buy a card reader that will read the memory stick outside of the camera?

I had the same trouble. The ''something simple '' solution may be --Connect your camera to the computer using a firewire connector. My computer is pretty weak with only 20megabites on an ancient hard drive. The OS was updated from '98 to XP and various USB ports were added at that time. The guy that did the work also had my camera to test it out before it left the shop. He said the firewire was necessary for a clean signal.

Kim Kommando once recommended that you not load drivers from the camera companies,so I let the computer find my camera. FYI mine is a Sony mini DV [digital tape] movie camera.

Are you taking the card out of the camera to download? If so, use the above mentioned firewire, or the usb connection cable that came with the camera.



The other problem we had with our canon was that the software they sent makes you set-up the default camera selection prior to plugging in the camera. You may want to uninstall the canon software and re-install it (without the camera attached until you select the options in set-up).

I am sorry I can't really help,but I was so frustrated with my windows based computers that I took the plunge about a year ago,and bought an iMac. The computer is amazing,and no matter what I plug into it the computer finds it,and opens the right program to use the stuff you want. Good luck.

An easy fix...

I think I forgot to format the SD Card. After I did it they download & play fine.
