Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Can't Stop Truck When Turning???

Hello, I am new here. . and a (within a year) first time diesel owner. I have a 99 2500 Quad Cab/Long Bed. It's my understanding that the brakes are powered by a hydro booster that runs off of the power steering. My problem is that when I am turning the wheel and braking, as in pulling into a parking space, my brakes turn rock hard and with both feet pushing down on the pedal I am lucky if I can stop the truck. It doesn't happen every time, but most of the time. I think it does it more if I start the turn first and then apply the brake. Now, this tells me that the pump isn't putting out enough boost, right? My truck only has 67,000 miles on it. Is this something that anyone knows about? Would this be covered by Dodge, and how bad would that be to replace for a learning backyard mechanic. I need to get this fixed before I hit anyone, I already ran into a 4x4 wood post because I couldn't stop her. Please let me know if you've heard of this problem and if you have any possible solutions. Thanks in advance, Josh

A couple of simple checks: PS fluid level, return line leaks. If you can, jack up both front tires and cycle the steering system from lock to lock with the engine not running. Check the PS level before and after. Mike

Belt could be slipping while the wheels are cut in one direction or the other causing power failure to the brake booster. The belt can slip without making a whining noise too. Make sure the belt tensioner is working correctly and the belt is not worn.

Ahhhh, aren't the PS pumps still gear driven on a 24v truck, same as a 12v truck?



Could have a bad accumulator also. It is the little cylinder on the booster.

The same thing was happening to a friends 98. 5. Found the leak while one person was holding the brakes while steering and another looking under the hood and underneath the truck. New hose and all good.

You know... when I first got the truck, last July. . I asked the dealer why it looked like something was leaking under the front end? They told me that diesel's just do that and that leaking and some sludge is perfectly normal. . Is this a load of BS or could this be part of the braking/power steering problem I am having? Thanks, I am still learning about diesel engines. Josh
