Capitalizing Every First Letter

I'll echo Tim's point about all caps being akin to shouting---our html allows the use of italics if a person wants to put emphasis on certain words.

Sure - IF you don't mind the extra keystrokes involved in first typing the key word, then highlighting it with the mouse, then selecting the desired code - all as opposed to simply holding down the shift key as you type.



When and if various boards choose to get militant about use of caps, they'll pretty much also need to regulate out poor spelling, grammar and sentence structure along with it.



Folks using these boards - and sometimes paying for the "privilege", come from widely varying educational and cultural backgrounds - trying to fit all into a common standard of written communication skill is an exercise in futility.



There are certainly FAR more grievous abuses happening regularly on these boards that are more worthy and deserving of focused attention than the trivial use of caps in words...



Personally, I would prefer and welcome the courteous and helpful input of someone with poor spelling and punctuation far more than the insults and abuses of one who is able to do it with impeccable sentence structure and grammar...

Poor spelling might "reflect poorly" upon the poster - but allowing what's going on over there reflects equally poorly on the whole board and the way it's moderated and run!

Learn a little bit about html and all it takes is a few extra keystrokes--not hard at all.

It's an internet-wide etiquette thing and has nothing to do with a specific site's internal thread/post composition or punctuation rules or issues. Amateur radio has similar, even more strict actually, codes of conduct, if I recall correctly. Not everyone talks the same, but some things are not said or done purely because of etiquette.

Probably so, but replying to a concerned member's comments is important as well--thus my reason for spending some time on this one.

First off, let me say thank you for bringing that thread to my attention. I personally am not a moderator assigned to the 3rd Gen forums and rarely visit over there, but did take the time to read that thread in its entirety and agree nothing more productive can come of it, so it is now closed.



Secondly, if any member ever sees a thread or post they feel is instigating unproductive conflict or is otherwise detrimental to the positive contributions of a thread or the board/site as a whole, then please by all means report that post or thread to a moderator. If you have done so and feel the situation has not been taken care of promptly, please bring it to the attention of Steve St. Laurent (lead moderator/webmaster) or Robin Patton (TDRAdmin, owner of TDR). If you don't want to PM any of the above, then please send a PM to me and I'll make sure the situation is looked at.

Speaking of spelling & punctuation, the most common goofs I see are overuse/misuse of apostrophes, as in using them on pluralized words. Would be nice to hit a Zap key and fix those turbo's cam's and RPM's



I suppose "RPM's" is one of my biggest peeves since it's not gramatically correct to say "RPM's" or "RPMs" but I can look past these little flaws and let the real quality of the post speak for itself

There are some posters who insist on no punctuation or caps. Just one long run on train of thought thing. I ignore those rather than trying to puzzle out what it is actually attempting to say.

LOL I've seen quite a few of those Joe. Then there are some who do use a little punctuation, but the reader is left without a clue as to what the poster is saying, let alone discovering what point (if any) exists.

Yes - without provocation when someone says I'm living in a dreamland and sarcastically calls me a genius, then continues to claim that a pressure box won't void the drivetrain warranty, I'll be left with no recourse than to suggest that the individual suffers from rectal-cranial inversion. I also see how you conveniently left out the part where I excused myself from the thread.

I don't even bother reading stuff that has horrible spelling or grammar. Can't take the time to write half-way proper, I don't need to waste my time trying to read it.

And that is why all of the alternative forums popping up are doing so well. I personally come here for advice and help on DODGE RAM subjects, not to be scolded like I am taking a third grade spelling test. If you want to correct people on spelling and grammar go become a teacher. This forum is quickly becoming an assembly of pompous a**ses that turn more people away than it welcomes. I for one try to spell correctly, but it really bothers me to see others just looking for some help ostracized for their grammar and spelling. No one wins in that situation.

A few spelling/grammar errors is one thing. I'm sure you've read some posts and had to stop and re-read it several times to try and figure out what they were trying to say.



If the person doesn't want to take the time and effort, why should I? I've read some stuff that a 2nd or 3rd grader could have done better!

Poor grammer and spelling is not the problem. It's trying to figure out a rambling mess with no attempt at grammer or spelling or making any sense that is the problem. I like to help people if I can, but if I can't figure out the problem because of the puzzle created by the writing I don't bother.

I know what you mean Joe. Although, if someone makes a post that lives outside of the US, then I try to ingnore the poor grammar. Some are still learning.



I have an aunt that some how passed the exams to become a teacher. I'll put it to you this way, she paased with an "A" in her english course. He grammar and spelling are so bad, that she's embarrased her kids. Enough so, that they now take care of the family Christmas letter. Also, she STILL can't figure out how to do the math to come up with her vehicle mileage. She is only a sub teacher. No one will hire her for a full time job. I have cousins from the other side of the family, and she is the teacher from hell. Not surprised though, I don't like her either.

TDR spell checker

While were on the topic of correct spelling, has anyone else noticed how poor the spell check function is? Words that are almost correctly spelled are caught by the checker, but no suggestions are made. I typically type out my post on "word" and paste it in after checking it for mistakes.



Like earlier posters I feel that correct spelling and grammar is not as important as a polite informative response. It is nice though when folks take the extra time to spell check and proofread their posts before submitting, as it shows a higher level of respect for the viewer.



Given the choice of book smart, and experience smart, I would always prefer experienced advice, even if poorly spelled.
