Car Dolly?

Hi Guys,

I have to drag a small front wheel drive car to NC next weekend. Is there anything I need to wory about. The lights on the fenders of the dolly will keep me out of trouble right? I am not sure of the laws in other states.

If its like my neighbors mini van that I pulled to a shop on a dolley last weekend; strap her down good, give the trailer and lights a good pre-flight inspection, and don't get a speeding ticket.



Don't forget that you cannot back them up, so be careful if you enter onto a dead-end street.

Thank for the info. There is no way I can get in trouble with the car lights off, as long as the dolly lights work- right?

I've seen some lexan attachments to the 2 wheel dollies behind motorhomers. No doubt duals would pummel the front of the dollied car more.

I think you have to have lights on the car as well. I had some old light bulb sockets for my 66 Plymouth, so I just made a little harness that I use when towing it that replaces the cars sockets. Nice and easy and I didn't have to hack up the car's wiring or put those magnetic lights on it.

I don't think the auto's lights are a requirement. Just make sure the dolly's lights work.



With the neighbors we did have the hazards on for the short trip; and a number of years ago towing my Prelude from San Diego to Seattle, I didn't have the car's lights hooked up. Never got stopped either.



edit: call one of the rental companies and ask them a "what if" kind of question.

When I rented a U-Haul tow dolly a couple of months ago, I was asked if I had separate lites for the towed vehicle & when I told them no, they replied that they were reqd but they rented to me anyway. Funny thing is, I had rented another U-Haul tow dolly about a month earlier from another place & was never even asked that question. Anyvay ... drove up to Charleston, SC & then back down from ~Greensboro, SC with vehicles in tow & NO addl lites without getting pulled over. FWIW, I traveled I-95 thru FL, GA, SC & I-26 thru SC. YMMV.

Thanks for the repleys, I will run the interstate to whole way, it sounds like I should not have any trouble. It sure beats dragging my 22' GN down and back. I have seen alot of dollys on the road but rarely notic any additional lights on the back car.

I made blocking so I can haul the dolly on the flat bed for the return trip.
