Interesting road signs...

I got quotes of 650 and 550 to move my truck 260 miles. That's on an open trailer.

I'm in the WRONG business... $2/mile plus???

If you are in the wrong business, once your truck arrives, you can then get in the right business, as you will have the engine for it.

Actually, the quote is probably not too far off. That is a 520 mile round trip. Good luck on finding someone to haul it reasonably. If you keep your powder dry, as opposed to getting in too much of a hurry, an acceptable(cost wise) option is sure to present itself.

yeah, that's the problem, there IS a time factor here. That's probbly the reason for the cost...

BTW, normal car transport costs on an open trailer are well under a buck a mile - according to one the TDR members who actually do it. Of course, the problem is that it's to Pahrump... Out of the way, and definitely a single move.

Power Wagon, I did not read all of the posts on the other threads. I thought you were going to Pahrump. How much is a bus ticket to where ever your pickup is. Can you get a temporary license (kind of like the car dealers stick in the window) locally to attach to your new ride to drive it out of the state. It was just a thought.

Oh, if it were only that easy... :(

California will charge me sales tax... a little over $500, if the truck is not invoiced to be delivered out of state. And by "delivered" I mean, "delivered", not just driven away.

I guess that's why "Kommifornia" seems so appropriate.

I could get some paperwork arranged by an out-of-state delivery service to satisfy the state, but it's not going to be doable by the 15th. If I could, that would mean that I'd catch a ride or bus to LA, hand him the paperwork and "deliver" the darn thing myself.

Otherwise, I guess I fly down later and get it. In any case, this is frustrating at the moment.

Thanks for letting me vent...

Some days the density of my skull amazes even me... :(

I believe I have the solution. I have 2 good friends who hold dealer licenses. I'll see if I can have one of them run the paperwork for this...

Sheesh. Why did that take so long. I'm quite sure that avoids the CA sales tax, as it's a wholesale transaction.

Have you checked to see if you have to pay the tax in Oregon if it's already been paid out of state? In my case I bought my truck in Ohio. They registered it there temporarily so I could drive it home. When I registered it here in Michigan becaue it had already been registered out of state I didn't have to pay the Michigan sales tax. Ready for the good part? When I bought it in Ohio they said that because I was taking it directly out of state I didn't have to pay the sales tax there either! :D I saved $1700 on my truck with that one - I couldn't believe my luck, felt like I had hit the lottery. In your case obviously CA is going to charge you the tax, but if you pay it there you may get out of the Oregon tax, however I'm sure the tax is probably higher in kommiefornia.

Hey Mark!

Check with your dealer friends about having the truck sold to one of them and then you just buy it from him. Dealer transfers from one dealer to another are not taxed, of course. Then you pay your local and state tax when you "buy" it from your dealer friend.

Another possibility would be to find out who some of the small car haulers are that deliver cars from auctions. I did this for a few years, and any car auction will have a few haulers hanging around. One of these will certainly pick the truck up and deliver it to you at a previously agreed upon location without bringing it all the way to your home. This could satisfy the law to the extent that the tax could be avoided due to "out of state" delivery.

Good Luck!

The dealer to dealer transfer fixed it all.

There is no sales ttax here in oregon, and the entire license, plates, title transfer, etc, is under $100.

Hey, that's great news!

Kind of reminds me of a situation I was involved in back in the 80's. I bought a 25' Trojan cruiser that I was keeping at a marina in Memphis, TN. I called the state capitol in Nashville to find out about registration and was told that since I live in Mississippi that I could register the boat in Mississippi if I wanted if the boat was going to be taken into Mississippi from Tennessee at least a certain number of times per year. I don't remember, but I think it was 3 or 4 times a year. It was only a few miles down the river, so that was no problem.

Since Tennessee registration would have resulted in paying sales tax on $10,000 and Mississippi registration carried no sales tax requirement, the choice was Mississippi registration.

About 3 months later I was stopped by a Tennessee Game and Fish officer who stated that he had been observing my boat always berthed at a Tennessee marina and that I was in violation of the law. I explained the information I had received from his own department and he said that I had received some wrong info. What really worked out was that transferring the registration from Mississippi to Tennessee at that time carried no sales tax requirement, since ownership was not changing. Some clerk in the Game and Fish office saved me about $700 or more.

Good luck with the new truck and keep all us first generation guys informed about it!
