CARB has something GOOD to say about diesel

Metro has 1,443 diesel buses fitted with filters and running on low-sulfur fuel to reduce emissions. A recent study by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) found that $94. 5 million Metro spent on the "environmentally friendly" natural-gas buses would have been better spent on new diesel buses that could operate just as cleanly — and cost about half as much.

Thanks for the link.

"Compressed natural gas is lower in emissions of nitrogen oxide than diesel. And it is because of nitrogen oxide emissions that the Washington area is in danger of exceeding air quality limits, with possible federal sanctions," he wrote in a letter published in The Washington Post on May 23.

I disagree with this premise (not that my opinion counts in this debate  ). Natural gas engines may be lower in NOx, but that's not the entire story. Once again, NOx is being blamed entirely for the ozone (O3) problems. In actuality, hydrocarbon emissions (NMOGs) are the main culprit in O3 formation. See this report (pdf format) for more information on O3 formation potential from comparable gasoline and diesel engines. Political statements like this have no scientific basis. If these cities really want to reduce O3 concentrations, they would need to ban (or at least significantly reduce) gasoline engine vehicles! :D

I wish these environmental extremist wackos would at least try to get their thoughts straight! On one hand they say ozone is a problem, on the other they think the ozone layer is deteriorating. Junk science is just so hard to explain. I don't believe either one.

Sssshhh!!!

We sell them their CNG compressors. :D :D

P. S. One thing they forget to mention when quoting low NOx numbers is the CO. Unless you have an oxidizing catalyst on a lean burn natural gas engine, the CO gets pretty high. The old "can't get something for nothing" rule.

These problems are going to continue until we get a handle on immigration.

I. 4 million immigrants every year, means an ENORMOUS number of old clunkers staying on the road. 1. 4 million immigrants means 14 million

(+ about 3-4 million babies) every decade. That is a new Los Angeles every 5 years. We have got to stop this if we want to keep pollution manageable.

Interesting anology. I cant help but agree with ya.

in the words of Bob Barker (sort of)

Spade or Neuter your immigrants (neighbors, inmates, politicians... insert your choice here.

Yes that's the problem--with most everything-- too many people!

And the dumber/poorer the person is the more likely they are to reproduce!

See ya next week on Politically Incorrect:D

Oh, yeah

I ride a bicycle-recreation mostly--but talk about emissions! It can get seriously funky out there:--)

It's a real blast to go on a big 400-500 rider event and get to dominate the streets for a few minutes.

Back to pollution. Motorists aren't organized to fight the EPA like mega-industry is. Nissan Motor Mfg. has been the biggest polluter in my area ever since they've been here. They just smile and pay the fine and go on. What happens when your car doesn't pass emissions?--U NO DRIVIE! Why not treat industry the same way?

Ya'll hear that? Manufacturing automobiles--and whatever else industry wants to do is way more polluting than operating automobiles. Even the smokey clunkers.

Why, because the Factories have the clout to throw the EPA monkey onto our backs and out of their hair.

I'm shutting up now. Oh yeah, last year I moved to a county with no interstate, no waterway, no railroad, and no emissions testing. When this place fills up, I'm going to Wyoming, Idaho, or AK.

I could of not said it any better,Wade and r rausch. I see you did not add Texas on your list of places to move to Wade. No need to move here, this state is slowly turning into another California. All that the politician in Texas think about is ecanomical develoment. Ecanomical develoment brings people, people bring cars, cars bring polution, then that causes you to pay more for cleaner burning fuel and to get your car sniff, higher price for inspection sticker and tags. Here in Galveston county we did not have a polution problem here ten years ago, much less twenty, thirty or fourty years ago. All the chemical plants in this area were built in the fifties and sixties. Some units have been torn down and others have been built in thier place, but over all the plants have not grown that much, but what has grown the most in this county is number of automobiles on the road. If anyone thinks cars dont polute then just get caught in a Houston traffic jam on a Houston freeway around seven thirty in the morning and row down your window, hang your head out and take you a big sniff, you will figure it out. To many people, to many cars. When are the politicians that are running this country going to wake up and close the borders and only let the people that are our allies come into this country???????????????

Reduction of Immigration won't happen until enough people write letters to Congress. I write. We've got to hold the Sons of B's accountable. They have to know how many people are fed up with the pollution, the crowding, the crime.

contact your congressman

Yeah, I write too. and Vote as well.

I don't write enough, and they'll (like this site) only let me vote once!

Term limits would help the Congress hear the people.

Are we totally off topic yet?:p

I think people felt the same way about the Irish immigrants when my family came over. I'm sure it wasn't pollution that was being blamed on them... Hmmm.

I guess I shouldn't say much, I'll just sit and listen to all the Native Indians on here.

Don't know if you can blame it all on immigrants. My sister lives in quiet all white single family home neighborhood near LA. Just ten years ago there were very few cars parked on the street, people parked in their garage and driveway. Now you can't find a place to park on the street. The demographics haven't changed much, just seems like everyone has more cars.
