Carcass Smell

How do you get rid of that infamous carcass smell?



Something has been smelling really foul in my jeep the last two days. I was starting to get real self conscience about my feet. Well I took a good look tonight during lunch break and found a dead bird laying along the front seat. You can smell it a few feet away with the doors or windows down.



Anybody with past experience have any good remedies?

Can't help you. I get a dead animal in the wall of my house once or twice a year. Short of tearing the wall out I just have to live with it for about a month until it goes away.

My advice would be to cover it up with something that smells worse, like skunk, or limburger cheese. That sould take care of the carcass smell.

My neighbor borrowed my van about 2 months and then I never checked the thing after he brought it back. Two weeks later I went to use it and it had an awful smell in it, so bad I had to jump back out. When I investigated I found a dead rat in the back, must have gotten in when he had the doors open. I used about a whole bottle of Febreeze on the carpet and left the windows open for a few days. The smell went away rather quickly with the Febreeze. The self car wash also had this spray in air freshener that I tried, only thing that did was burn my eyes and as soon as it wore off the smell was back.

Place 2 uncooked eggs under the seat. After a few days, you wont even notice the "dead" smell anymore.

Spray anything fabric with febreze... . SOAK it.



Then in the auto cleaning supply section at walmart they sell small aerosol cans of air sanitizer called "OZIUM" It works VERY well. After you've sprayed the febreze spray the ozium every day until the smell is gone. It is supposed to reduce the airborn bacteria which decay stuff... the bacteria are what cause the smell. I have used it to get rid of cat pee odor(which is NASTY especialy here in Florida during these 100% humidity days), the smell of dead animals, and several rotten food odors.



The cans are small and run about 4 or 5 bucks... and have a few scents to choose from. Trust me... it works.

A friend of mine used to work at a used car lot... he would wash/wax/vacuum the beasts before sale.



He had one customer that would come once a year to get 'stink bombed'. This lady used to fill the back of her hatchback on a regular basis with hay and manure... talk about a clear case of needing a trailer or a pick'em-up truck.



Anywho - all he would do is give it a really good vacuum job and set off one of those anti-smell stink bombs used with cars that had electrical fires. It worked very well in that car. When I used to work for the ambulance service... I picked up a few cans of the stuff he used and was never disappointed.



You can't buy it over the counter in normal stores - you have to get it from a janitorial supply place... or know someone that keeps a few cases on the shelf.



It's like $5. 00/can and is worth every penny... it's so strong that I usually only had to use 1/2 a can per vehicle. Set the A/C to recirc - set the can on a sheet of cardboard in the vehicle and let her rip...

Another option...

There is a product called a Ozone Generator, most high end car details places will have one, it can be used on any organic smell and it the most effective thing I have ever found. You plug it in and leave it in your car for a couple of hours and the smell is GONE... .....

I have worked in animal damage control for the Fed. Govt. We used a product developed by the USDA called neutroleum alpha.

We would use it to remove skunk essense from clothing, vehicles, etc. I have used it to remove the smell of canine trapping scent from my clothing and my work vehicle. ( many people said the trapping scent smells like dead animals) I know people who have worked in crime scene clean up who use it. It is available from the USDA Animal Damage Control P. O. (402) 434-2340. It is very concentrated so a little goes a long way. Happy smells to you.

If ozone will get rid of the smell, you may try getting a black light (a real one, not an incandescent bulb) and leaving it on overnight in the car with the windows up. The more the merrier, a black light produces ozone, and should be a lot easier to find than an ozone generator. Use only florescent Black light bulbs, I think you can even buy them at home depot.

I got mice in my GTO seats while in storage so I tried a urinal block based on a friends recommendation. I opened the package and placed it under the seat for a week. Worked like a champ.
