When a carrier bearing fails, does is just start to vibrate, make noise, or just fall apart. I have a 2000 4x4 with 90k, after an 800 mile trip tis weekend with a jeep behind it, I have a strange "hum" at 60-70mph when you you are just cruising down the road. If I press the gas or let off the hum goes away. It is very noticeable. Noticeable enough even for my wife to ask me "what's that noise??"

Another thing is the transmission seems a little noisier when downshifting it when slowing to a light. Especially as I downshift in 2nd gear when letting off the clutch as I slow the truck down approaching a light. I guess it could be bearings in the transmission too.

Anyone who has had one go out, did it give warning???

I tried to push the driveshaft up and down at the carrier bearing and it seems tight. I know the U-joints are still tight. Not to say after 90k they are not starting to dry out and need replacement, but I have seen much worse. Will just the bearing portion of the carrier bearing wear out without the rubber getting destroyed around it and just make noise and no vibration???

TimToolMan, why did you get the bearing from the dealer??? Better, only place to get it???

I will probably get the carrier bearing and try this fix first and add new U-joints at the same time...

Thanks,

Tim

I would do both now. In my foolish days when I drove a Ford x-cab, the same thing happened. Started as a humming sound, stopped at gas station (which you do frequently when you drive a 460) found a little play in the u-joints and made it a few hundred more miles down the road to a dealer who replaced all incl. carrier bearing. I think when they are just starting to go out, the rubber won't show any damage. It's only when they crater completely will they tear up the rubber.

Well is wasn't that carrier bearing. After a short trip to lunch today I felt the bearing and it wasn't hot nor was it loose, but now 2nd and 3rd gear make horrible noise and the transmission pops when you roll off the clutch. I was under the truck as someone rolled off the clutch and moved the truck forward. It is definatly the transmission.

At least it only has 92k on it. I think that means I still have 8k of warranty left...
