Reset, maybe. You need to check it when you reinstall it. You *might* get lucky and still have it in spec when you install them. If I was doing it, the backlash would change and need reshimed. ;)

Why are you replacing the carrier bearings? Are you worried about a failure due to wear and backlash being wrong? Or are the bearings pitting? If you just want piece of mind, I would check the backlash and pattern, if backlash is loose just reshim with the original bearings, provided they are still in good use.

I've got a month old problem thats came down to me checking them. I can take a pry bar and move the carrier up and down. I can't see it but I can feel a slight movement and mostly I can hear the slop as the grease "smacks" as the bearings move in the race. But the pinion "appears" tight. I can't make it move a bit, not saying that the engine torque doesn't move it though. I'm trying to fix this on my own. Having never set up a rear end i'm fearing having to set it up. But I know I can throw a set of carrier bearings in it. Bottom line is i'm trying to turn 800$ into a 150$ fix.

Make sure you check the thrust surfaces on the diff housing. The Dana 70 is notorious for wear in that area. My local diff shop has made tools to repair that surface to save having to replace the entire housing.
