Carry Pistols Revisited

A while back I made a post asking opinions of everyone on the Springfield XD series pistols. Well, they . 40 XD series in a 4" barrel is still near the top of my list. My question is, those of you that carry, what do you have and why do you like it? I'd like to stick with a 4" barrel 'cause I have pretty big hands. The smaller glocks all seem a little too small (right hand pinky ends up hanging off the grip) So, what do you guys carry? What led you to purchase it? would you purchase another one? I have about 6 months till I am applying for concealed carry, so I have some time to make a decision.

I purchased one of these new in 1996 and have had very good luck with it. I have quite a few from various manufacturers, but this one is still my favorite "carry" gun.

Keep in mind that almost every major manufacturer (Beretta, Springfield, Glock, Sig, etc..... ) is putting out a fairly high quality product. Almost every handgun owner will have their favorite manufacturer and caliber. The truth is, you have to find what you are most comfortable with. I'm not familiar with any of your local dealers, but your best bet is to find a dealer with a range. Most of these will allow you to try a demo for a nominal fee. Also, keep a watch out for a manufacture's demo day at your local range. Usually the reps will bring several dozen handguns that you can fire for a small fee.

In the summer and in the city I carry my Kahr K9 or a S&W 4013 because they are easy to conceal. In the winter or when I am in the mountains I carry my full size Kimber in . 45 ACP. I am seriously considering selling the 4013 and getting a Tactical Pro Kimber or a mid-size Para Ordnance LDA. I was really impressed by the LDA trigger pull I recently tried at a gun shop.

My carry piece is a Kimber Ultra carry in SS, . 45acp That will get the job done, is easily concealed and danged accurate. 3" barrel has no more recoil than my full sized 1911 Colt.

When i was living in NC, i carried a glock 32(357Sig). It worked well for me. I didn't have any trouble concealing it in a Sidearmor IWB holster. If i had it to do over again, i would choose a Glock 19. 9mm may not be the most effective, but in it's better loadings, it's a great performer, and you can practice twice as much for the same amount of $. Lots of practice with a good round, is better IMO than less practice with a slightly better round.

I carry a Sig 226 or a 229. I don't think that barrel length is a real concern ( I use IWB holsters) the barrel is down along my hip and so a 4" or 5" even longer does not hamper concealment. The length and size of the grip are what matters the most. The 229 has a slightly shorter grip than the 226, the 229 has slightly shorter barrel, but again barrel length is not a real issue IMO. Thus the 226 is easier to hide especially if just wearing a light shirt.



with all of that being said I generally carry the 226 cheaper to shoot thus that is what I am better with.



If you wear a fanny pack to carry your gun, the shorter barrel maybe better you could have a smaller fanny pack.

I've carried a Glock 17, Beretta M92, and a Sig P220 - all were too big to easily conceal during the warmer months... which is about ten months of the year around here.



The Glock 19 is the ideal size as far as I'm concerned. The department gave us the choice of the 19 or the "baby" Glock, which is just too small for me. (We're required to carry concealed on-duty). I'd rather have . 40 caliber, but 9mm is effective with the right ammo.



I have a Taurus M85 . 38 Special that I carry off-duty, but will probably pick up a semi-auto somewhere down the road - I'm leaning towards a Colt Officer's Model in . 45 ACP.
