Archived CASE 580E 5.9 diesel loss of power and died wont start HELP

Ok guys here is the situation

I was on the backhoe (case 580E with the 5. 9 cummins) upon leaving a job to go down the road to another the motor just acted like it was losing power and kept going, so i put the shuttle shift in Neutral and tred to rev it and NOTHING "dead pedal"..... I got it off to the side and it died. NOW it wont start, Nobody around has ran it outa fuel so were not sure but the gauge says its between Empty and Half tank..... (gauge hasnt failed yet... ) Did the pump die? How do the manual pumps commit suicide? I dont think its been rebuilt (the pump) and its go around 7000 hrs on it

Is it a VE pump (rotary) or a P pump (inline)? That's assuming it's a mechaical pump I guess My suggestion is change the fuel filters. You may find no fuel in them, a lot of crud, or possibly a blockage in the tank. Don't always assume the worst first

crack the nut lose at the injector and turn it over watch to see if its got a good squirt then you know if you've got pressure , do'nt be close to the opening when cranking becouse there is a lot of pressure. what yr. is that ? if no pressure then look for leaking fuel line, just remember that the pump is sucking so you may not be able to see a spraing type leak. with these I always look for the simple stuff and basics first becouse they are so relyable.

Its the filter. Change it out. 14. 00 is a cheap diagnostic troubleshooting remedy. Mike

its a Rotary pump, but there is a fuel pump before the filters and when I cracked the line it had LITTLE fuel comming upto the filters from the pump (on the side of the block) Ill pulled the primary filter and it looked OK, I didnt pull the secondary filter but I will tomorrow. ok its the 4banger cummins, Im not sure if they are the same liter. I thought it was the 6cyl. Its not outa fuel haha :-laf



If its a "sucking" pump then whats up with the smaller pump on the block? I figured it would push more fuel than a little drip. It looks like a regular FP that youd see on a 350 chevy or 6. 2 diesel.

I can't rember, on the E series, is the fuel tank part of the side saddle steps, or is the fuel fill between the exhuast and the driver compartment, like the K series. ?



We have had issues losing prime on our 760 trencher, it has a 4bt, and the fuel tanks are under the operator station/part of the steps.

You said the gauge shows between empty and half, but did anyone look in the tank?

The 4 cylinder is a 3. 9L.



Replace the fuel filters first. If that's not it, and nothing blocking the flow from the tank and no leaks, it could be the lift pump. Particularly if it is an old one 7000hrs is a lot.

The fuel tank is in behind the gauge cluster (fill ontop of hood)

I went back to work and stuck a stick in the tank and it was 2/3 empty so the gauge is working

Ian, just change the filters out, how can you tell the filter looks "OK" just by looking at it?

You know what C. A. S. E stands for right? :-laf The only good think in a case is its engine! Definately do the fuel filter(s)and if it looks like a cheap pump figure out the pressure it pumps and get a cheapy from napa. The dealer will probly want $200 for a $20 pump!! :--)

Fuel pump should have a manual level on the side of it. You may have to bump the starter to get level off the high part of the cam lobe. Then you can bleed the fuel system by hand right up to the injector pump and should feel resistance as you pump and be able to get fuel out of the bleed valves. Might need to crack a few injectors to finish bleeding the pump while someone turns in over. I have two of these in my boat and they are relieve little criters. B150 is what they call mine. 3. 9L. MMeier, I took a flashlight and looked in the filters



we replaced the pump 56. 00 later its back up alive!
