I'm looking into a 4" exhaust from Jardine, but it seems to me that since my 98. 5 24V doesn't have a cat, then I could just go with a 4" cat back system instead of the turbo back and save the $120. I'm assuming that the pipe that leaves the turbo is 4".

Can this be done?

yes it can be done but no the pipe is not 4" from the turbo now.

depending on what you have done to the truck exhaust doesnt do much for performance. about 25-50F off EGT's and a little quicker spool-up (not even a seat of the pants thing)

with that said as you can see i have the Jardines Kit and Love it.

buuuutttttt, I did not like the muffler the kit came with, i have a 12770 muffler from them and NOW I love it.

it wasnt loud enough over the stock system the first time. it was about equal to it. :D

You wont be saving much money by not getting the downpipe, and it will hurt the gains of a 4" system by still haveing 3" dumping into it. May as well do it right the first time.

Nuke the cat and get a flow thru muffler, but save the cash from all that other stuff, so you can save up for a PDR turbo. -- Joe D. has done the dyno tests that show a 3" system, no cat and walker muffler only had 7 less HP than a 4" or 5" straight piped CTD, measured using aprox 400HP engine. My 2cents.

The only reason you get a 4" exhaust is not just for more HP, its also for lower EGT's and quicker Turbo Spoolup. Straight piping your 3" system will NOT lower your EGT's as much as a 4" exhaust. So thats another advantage of the 4"

One other point about getting the full 4" from the turbo back is;

If you don't get it now, and need to get a 4" downpipe later, the 4" downpipe will cost you around $180. 00.

If it was me, I would spend the extra $120 now and not have to worry about it later. You also don't have to worry about it being long enough or matching up if you buy the 4" downpipe later.

Just my $. 02.

BOMBing is addictive! Do it now!

I agree, but that PDR turbo is gonna reduce EGT's and give quicker spool much better that the 4" downpipe will. Costs more yeah.

I wont disagree witht the gonna cost more if you have to go back and do it later theory. I only suggesting a change in the rules for the 300-350 hp guys. I agree with the cat and flow thru muffler. But from there I am gonna save the cash from the expensive exhausts, housings, and air systems and get a turbo. It will lower EGTs, spool fast and all that. Only better and for close to the same money. We have had quite a few testimonials lately. Seems like Piers turbo is up-to the task. -- This is the route I am gonna try.

Now for you 400+hp rigs, thats another story.

SlyBones,

The cost is not a theory, it is a fact. Call Stan's headers or Diesel Dynamics, downpipe is $180+! For the $120 spent now and the knowledge that it fits perfectly, and will not have to replace it at a later time is worth the money! Plus it will help lower EGT's and increase spoolup of the turbo.

Again, not theory, just facts!

I have heard the sound of the Jardine 4" exhaust on several trucks. This is also a factor that nobody has mentioned.

On both trucks, I would have to say that I have heard no better sounding systems. As one guy I work with leaves the parking lot, I always stop and listen to him shifting as he goes down the road... to me, nothing sounds sweeter!

On kinda that note, has anyone treid a Walker(dynomax) #24217 muffler? It is only 5" OD, with 4"ID. How loud would that be?

Poor choice of words, I agree with the fact. The fact is not wrong. I am just gonna save that extra $120, just keep my standard K&N and not get the extra air system, save that extra $80+ dollars ( assuming you are upgrading from stock ), and try and stick with the stock 12cm housing and not get a $400+ dollar 14cm housing. Take that $600+ and get a $695 turbo instead.

Its gonna lower EGT's and spool faster, and prolly do it just as good as a downpipe, 14 housing, and air system. -- However I will agree with Rob, its not gonna sound as good.

Again I am not saying the fact is wrong. Just there are new parts out, and maybe there are different ways to spend your money, if you are budget limited.

One MORE thing to consider, a 4" turbo to tail exhaust wont void you warranty, changing the turbo will. I would rather keep my waranty on my stock turbo (with a warranty) and make up for the power a bigger turbo will give me with parts that WONT void my warranty
