Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Quick Question

Where should the catalytic converter be located on a 1996 club cab? I see what looks like a resonator on the pipe (downpipe?) that comes off the engine at an angle, and I have a muffler toward the rear of the truck, but a previous owner may have installed a test pipe if the cat supposed to be right under the cab. Thanks, Mike

My '96 came with one but it's a Canadian truck (not sure if that makes a difference). It seems hit and miss for the model years that did or didn't come with one, theres a post out there somewhere that identifies the years that did have a Cat.

My 96 came with a cat, no resonator. The cat should be a pretty large device, about 6-7" round at the largest diameter. It goes from the 3" stock exhaust slowly tapers up to the 6-7" then quickly tapers back down to the 3" weld. A resonator, which my dad's 99 had, but no cat, looks kinda like an enlarged exhaust pipe. Stock size was 3" i believe, the resonator would have been about 3 3/4" and rust colored. A cat is made from stainless i think, so it wouldnt rust at all.

Is a cat required for inspection there? Here in PA they just do a visual, and the guy I use to inspect my truck knows me pretty well so he doesnt even look. heh. my cat has been gone since I got my truck. just have a 4" muffler in there now

good luck

Thanks for the replies. No inspection here in Oklahoma. I was just curious as it was something I noticed. After looking at the truck again today, I realized I was incorrect in my initial post. The "resonator" or whatever it is, is located just before the muffler. I just bought the truck over the weekend. Of course I thoroughly inspected it before I bought it, but now that I have it home, I'm just looking it over to see what improvements might be necessary. :D
