CAT REMOVAL

I HAVE 2 QUESTIONS,I'M THINKING OF REMOVING MY CAT AND MUFFLER I' NOT CONCERNED ABOUT NOISE BUT SOMEONE FROM THE DARK SIDE WITH A POWERSTROKE TOLD ME WHEN HE REMOVED HIS CAT HIS FUEL MILAGE DROPPED AND HE COULDN'T STAND THE SMELL HAS ANYBODY HAS THESE PROBLEMS WITH THE CUMMINS ALSO DOES THE CUMMINS 5 YEAR 100,000 MILE WARRENTY START
AT THE END OF THE DODGE 3YEAR 50,000 WARRENTY
OR DOES IT START WHEN YOU BUY THE TRUCK.

Picking up better milage will depend on if your cat is clogged. As far as the smell goes I can't stand the smell of a catted Diesel, but don't mind at all the smell of a non catted diesel in fact I kind of like it alot. #ad

I agree with Dee, but go a step further and can't stand the smell of a catted gasser either. You will lose no mpgs and may gain some if the cat is starting to plug.

KILL THE CAT!!!! My truck has fairly low mileage and it has never ran better since the cat left to live in my barn. The exaust sounds nonrestricted now and the truck has quicker response. I still have the original muffler on and doesn't seem to cause much back pressure. The noise is at the same level. The 50 K miles cat was fairly plugged with soot. The air smells better now, but it seems like my truck smokes more without the cat. I'm glad I did it!!!!!!!!!!Herb

'96 4x4 Dodge Cummins Truck,Smitty built running boards,AT,CD plr,Gemtop steel canopy basically stock and Polar white in color. Only 50 k miles and my cat now hangs in the barn while I "test" my exaust! Next "bomb" item is gauges and plates!!

Because the muffler on my 96 rusted off at the tailpipe end I decided to get rid of both the muffler and the cat. They were both replaced with a straight pipe for about $75, at a shop I cannot disclose. The cat was not plugged but was sooty.

While I have not yet roared up any mountain grades with a load, the noise level empty is not disturbing at all. My wife didn't even notice the difference. There is a slight droning when accelerating around 2200 RPM but it is not really objectionable and only occurrs when accelerating.

EGT seems to be lower when cruising, the turbo spools much quicker, my standard performance check (how fast I can go before I pass a sign after making a turn at the stop sign) went from 70mph to 75 mph, and the turbo cools downs quicker. It is also interesting to note when I shut off the truck and walk around the back I can still hear the turbo and feel air coming from the tailpipe.

I would not remove a good exhaust system but I am glad I didn't replace the muffler and I am glad kitty is in the garage. Cats don't like cars anyway!

The Cummins warranty ends 5yrs from the original purchase date of the truck or 100k miles, which ever comes first.

When I removed the "cat" from my 96' my
mileage went UP, just slightly. Mine was
clogged up real bad with carbon deposits.
When I cut it open it looked like it was
full of "Kingsford Charcoal Briquets!!"

I say "lose the cat. " Keep it in case you
need it for "inspection purposes. " You can
buy a "Catalytic Converter Test Pipe" from
Dodge for about $40. 00. It fits right in
where the cat goes perfectly. The part #
is: #52019170AB.

I too lost my kitty, Cummins runs 100-150 deg. cooler EGT. The cat was clogged so much that I could barely see light through it. I drove out to Pheonix last weekend and got 18. 6 mpg on two lane mountain roads, returned via I-10 with the cruise set at 75 mph and got 20. 4 mpg. I don't miss the cat, or the muffler. Wife hates the smell, I think it smells like a real truck now, which is good, instead of a choked-up GM gasser which smells like gutting ducks.
