I pulled my catalitic converter off today after reading that a stopped up converter causes a drop in fuel milage. I had taken my truck in for warranty 30,000 miles back for that reason and they never did get my milage back up where it had been before. I noticed that it idles about 100 rpms more now so I figure there must have been a restriction. What I would like to know is how to gut this blasted thing. On my last truck I took an iron bar and poked the guts out of it. This one it is like beating on an anvil; doesn't faze it a bit. How do I gut this thing?

I was told that taking it off in Colorado was a huge fine. Exhaust Pro's won't even consider it as they say oxygen sensors are fore and aft and would screw up computer along with breaking state law.

Hit allittle harder....

I will break up but you really have to get after it. You could try to run a large bit through to get ahole to start with.

It is pretty easy to flatten the pipe on the convertor with beating on it.

I used a 1/2" drill motor with a long 2" speed bit, or an extension with standard length bit. Took a while but it worked. Drill and then hold vertical and hit sides with a rubber malet to get junk out. Kept repeating until staight thru. I didn't try to completely clean out all the guts, left enough in sides so when tapped it sounds complete. The speed bit won't cut anything else when your finished.

I used a 1/2" socket extension, about 2' long. Stood the sucker on end & started driving the end thru. Had to go thru the honeycomb stuff in about 4 or 5 places before it started breaking up. Lots of swinging alright. :( One of the last swings to get the last pices out, glanced off the end & smacked the back of my left hand. :mad: :eek: :{

Not that it's gutted, I have to get it mod'd for 4" in & out. Got a visual to pass before October. :-{}

I used a big long manonry bit that went through it like soft butter. Then punched out all the pieces and put it back on. I don't think I would have ever been able to beat it out. Thanks for the advice. Now all I need is a new crossover pipe. Mine was rusted through over the axle. I was wondering why it was getting noisier.
