Regular cab, 5spd trucks with single piece driveshaft have these (94-97)? Anyway?

My brother's 98 12v 2x4, 5spd (quad cab short box) did not, although it has the similiar single piece driveshaft.

I've also seen some driveshaft shops remove and balance without them too, go figure.

Sorry I don't have the ultimate answer, just relating similiarities of where I've seen it used.

On a rainy day, I'll look up some combos in the parts manuals for various years and see if that or the FSM turns up the why and where it was consistently used.

Better yet, somebody probably knows, so maybe they'll chime in. .

Good luck

Andy

97 regular cab automatic long bed. That is a good enough explanation for me. Andy you alwayz seem to have a plethra of knowledge. Appreciate it.

I have a 97 extended cab long bed, 2 peice d/s, and mine has one of them. it's like a harmonic balancer for the d/s. Same construction as the balancer on the engine.

I think you're right. Mine is a 96 & it's a CAT. Here's some pics. edit ... WAS a cat. ;)

It's been "tweaked" to mate up to the 4" outlet :-laf

Is the big round chunk in the exhaust a CAT? I have the same thing in my 97 buts its been moved towards the rear of the vehicle. I was curious as to what it was.

Balancer on driveshaft

I had one of them balancers on my 95 GMC Safari van (same as Chevy Astro). It was on the yoke coming out of the Automatic trans. The trans died so I got one from junkyard. I took it to a trans shop and asked and they said it wasn't necessary. They replace it with one without the balancer. Same story from dealer transmission mechanic. The junk yard trans did not have it. Learn something new every day.

I'll have to look under my truck and see if it has one.
