My '97 Dodge diesel came with a cat. Did everybody's? It's a California truck. And how about the newer ones? Thanx.

Mine had one. I straight piped it, and the guys in inspection never gave it a second look.

I think all 12 valvers had one after mid 1994 until the 24 valve engine.

The Califonia trucks had more emission stuff than 48-state trucks. Depends on where you reside as to whether you can monkey with the cat and get away with it. I prefer to operate under the "Don't ask - Don't tell" scenario of emissions compliance - or, as somebody else on this board pointed out, just play dumb - "I bought this truck used with this exhaust system already on it. Yeah, I think it is a bit loud, too. What do you mean it doesn't have a catalytic converter? Are you sure?"

The '94 and '95 trucks are almost the same everywhere. All trucks have a cat after Jan '94. The CA trucks have a different timing and maybe some other pump changes to meet the smog requirements. The delivery on my '95 was delayed several months before the '95 automatics were approved for CA. '96 and later CA trucks have an EGR valve.

The last time I went through emmissions, I watched to see if they looked for the cat. They didn't. I asked the head guy if they check for it and he said yes. I have a gutted cat so it really didn't matter, but I am going to a 4 or 5" exhaust soon.
